Dickinsonian, November 1888
Dickinson is represented at a YMCA Convention in Allentown. The Glee Club begins planning for concerts. A bonfire on campus on Halloween night causes a well-publicized scuffle between the Carlisle Chief of Police and a combined detachment of firefighters from Mechanicsburg and Carlisle. Alumni make gifts to the college to fund the purchase of books and reference materials. Professor Himes plans a lecture series for Seniors to take place in the Jacob Tome Scientific Building. Professor Fletcher Durell is conferred a Ph.D. from Princeton College. The football team for the year is selected. Dickinson loses a football game to Bucknell, and ties another with State College. At a follow-up game against State College, Dickinson wins by a score of 16-0. Phi Delta Theta breaks ground for a tennis court on the south side of Bosler Hall, near Main Street.
