"The Voices Now That Answer Not": Horatio Collins King and the Role of the Veteran in Remembrance

Horatio Collins King's remembrance of war led him to put his feelings and memories to use in aiding his fellow soldiers through life after the war, and memorializing the fallen through his work on various committees and associations. He was proud of his service to his country in the war, and felt that the nation should respect and have pride in the veterans as he did. He was not ashamed of having fought for the safety of the Union. This paper will explore the life of Horatio Collins King, and investigate how his childhood and memories of his service in the Civil War shaped his life from 1866 until his death following the end of World War I in 1918.
