Union General Thomas C. Devin writes Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton to recommend that the now retired Major Horatio Collins King be brevetted Colonel for his actions as an Aide de Camp at the Battle of Five Forks on April 1, 1865. This battle was a crushing blow to the Confederate Army, and began the campaign which led to their surrender eight days later at Appomattox Court House. This letter is a copy of the original.
