"Within the Landscape" Symposium

A symposium entitled "Within the Landscape: Perspectives on Nineteenth-Century American Scenery" was held on March 27, 2004, in conjunction with a traveling exhibition of landscapes that were on display in the Trout Gallery. The symposium addressed the role of religion in landscape painting, the impact of travel and transportation on attitudes towards the natural scenery, the panoramic mode in Hudson River School painting, and the production and consumption of landscape imagery in prints and ceramic transfer ware.
