Noise Policy Enters Trial Basis
Mon., Apr. 8, 1985
The Student Affairs and Services Committee adopted a noise policy for the College at its meeting on Thursday, March 28, which went into effect on a trial basis Monday, April 8th. The new policy used measurements of sound levels taken by campus police at the door of the residence with a sound meter. On weekdays, social events could not exceed a level of 95 decibels prior to 1 a.m. After 1 a.m., the max decreased to 85 decibels. On the weekends, the 85 decibel max went into affect after 2 a.m. Measurements taken at the residence of the complainer could have a maximum level of 65 decibels until the respective turn-down hour, when the maximum decreased to 55 decibels. One formal warning was permitted during a two-week cycle, and a second offense will resulted in a $100 fine, with subsequent fines imposed at $200. The policy was an attempt "to look for reasonable hours for both the Dickinson community as well as the Carlisle community", and was set to be reviewed within a two-year period.
