This circular letter relates to an effort to recruit individuals to serve as ministers for Union soldiers during the Civil War. “In this emergency, the Christian Commission calls for the voluntary efforts of delegates clerical and lay… for the maintenance of a constant succession of religious and other ministrations among our brave defenders,” as the circular notes. While “no salaries” are provided, it reassures volunteers that “all necessary expenses will be paid.” Three Cumberland County residents, Samuel Philips, Francis J. Clerc, and H. Saxton, sign this circular on December 15, 1864.
