Letter from Spencer Baird to George Lawrence

Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution Spencer Baird writes to George Lawrence regarding the "great activity in scientific explorations" and the need for "more collectors." "[Henry W.] Henshaw, [Charles J.] Maynard, & [Joseph H.] Batty will probably all go out in one party or another," as Baird explains. Baird, who is looking for a taxidermist to go to the Rocky Mountains, asks Lawrence for help in finding someone for this job. In addition, Baird is looking for a surgeon who could also serve as a naturalist. Baird also asks that Lawrence visit him this spring.
