Athletic Events

The Dickinson men's basketball team continued its dream season with an 81-71 win over Wheaton College of Illinois at Illinois Wesleyan, advancing to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA National Championship. Junior Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) scored 22 points, all in the second half, to lead the Red Devils. Senior guard Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) added 17 points and three assists to lead the Devils into the "Elite Eight". 

Dickinson traveled to Lafayette for the season finale. Lafayette humiliated the Red Devils, shutting them out 36-0. This was coach Nathan P. Stauffer's last game at the helm.

Syracuse traveled down to Carlisle to take on the Red Devils. Syracuse had something to relish on the long bus home, though, as they took back a 18-7 victory.

Dickinson traveled to Lewisburg, PA, to take on Susquehanna. The interesting part about this game, though, is that the field was not marked, there were no referee whistles, and not even a football. Eventually both teams walked off of the field due to frustration with the decisions of the officials present. Football or no football, the record book shows a 16-6 Dickinson win.

The Red Devils traveled to Lancaster to take on rival Gettysburg. Dickinson could not get much going, ultimately losing 11-5.

Mt. St. Mary's was rudely reawakened when they traveled to Carlisle only to be the victim of a 41-0 beatdown.

Swarthmore visited Carlisle to take on the Red Devils and left with a one-point 6-5 win.

The Red Devils again traveled to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions. Penn State cruised to an easy 15-0 win.

"Pop" Warner and the Carlisle Indian School took the trip down the road to take on the Red Devils. Carlisle would not be stopped, as Dickinson's defense allowed their first points of the season. Carlisle took home a 16-7 victory.

The Red Devils traveled to Lancaster to take on Franklin & Marshall. F&M had no answer for Dickinson's offense or defense, as Dickinson cruised to a 51-0 win.

Dickinson took on Haverford on the road, Technically the Red Devils picked up their third shutout of the season, but unfortunately their offense was nonexistent as they tied Haverford 0-0.

The Red Devils traveled to Baltimore to take on Baltimore Medical School. They also collected their second shutout of the season, winning 11-0.

Dickinson opened up their 1899 season at home, taking on visiting Lebanon Valley. The Red Devils started off their season on a high note, securing an impressive 36-0 victory.

The Red Devils traveled to Washington D.C. to take on the Hoyas of Georgetown. Drama ensued when Dickinson ran a trick play that saw a fake punt where the fullback that was supposed to punt the ball actually passed it to the quarterback who ran behind him all the way for a touchdown. Back in those days forward passes were still illegal, so the field umpire overturned the score. The other official disagreed, and they stayed on the field arguing until the moon came out.

Frysinger Evans (Class of 1892) wrote and published an article in the Dickinsonian giving his insight to the problems and possible solutions for them in the Dickinson athletic department at a time when it had been struggling. Evans was the treasurer of the college when he wrote this article.

In the 1898 season finale the Red Devils yet again traveled to State College to take on the Nittany Lions of Penn State. Penn State destroyed Dickinson 34-0, leaving their final season record at a program best 8-2.

Gettysburg and Dickinson met again for the first time in 5 years, as the Red Devils crusied to a 44-0 shutout victory.

Dickinson erupted on both sides of the ball, embarrassing Lebanon Valley 56-0.

Dickinson traveled to Lancaster to play Franklin & Marshall. The Red Devils cruised to another easy win, 22-0, putting them at 6-0 on the season.

Wyoming Seminary visited Carlisle only to take a 23-0 whooping at the hands of the Red Devils. This win moved Dickinson to 5-0.

Red Devils easily defeated visiting Haverford 24-0, bringing their record on the season to 3-0.

The Red Devils traveled to Bloomsburg and edged out a 6-0 win, bringing their season record to 2-0.

The first game of the Red Devils' season saw Susquehanna visit Carlisle. They were quickly sent packing as Dickinson won easily 24-0.

Entering the game undefeated with a mark of 6-0, the Red Devils were humiliated on their own home field by a score of 46-0.

Dickinson traveled to Easton to take on Lafayette, winning 12-6. This was the first time Dickinson ever beat Lafayette. This also moved the Red Devils to 4-0 on the season.
