Bud Shaw (Class of 1980), HIV/AIDS activist and Senior Hufstader Prize Winner, died from complications with AIDS. Shaw spoke about HIV/AIDS at Dickinson in October of 1991 and was scheduled to return in the spring of 1992.
Howard Lane Rubendall (Class of 1931), President of Dickinson College from 1961-75 and namesake of the Rubendall Recital Hall, died at the age of 80 at his home in Florida.
Senator John Heinz died in a plane crash near Philadelphia. Dickinson College had selected Senator Heinz to be its 1991 Commencement speaker, and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree was awarded posthumously at that event.
A "memorial service" (including an eulogy, a moment of silence, and refreshments) is held for the library's card catalogue, which was replaced by the electronic AutoCat application in 1990.
Boyd Lee Spahr, a member of the Class of 1900 and President Emeritus of the Board of Trustees, died at age 90. Spahr had actively participated in the Dickinson community for most of his life.
Chi, the collie mascot of the Sigma Chi fraternity, was put down in the biology lab by Professor Milton Walker Eddy after years of debate and veterinary recommendations. Chi was buried later that day in the backyard of the Sigma Chi house.
The Hon. Edward W. Biddle (Class of 1870), president of Dickinson's Board of Trustees, died on July 4th in his home in Carlisle after a lengthy illness. He was buried in Ashland Cemetary on July 7th. Honorary pallbearers included Acting-President James Henry Morgan, Dean Montgomery P. Sellers, and Professor Wilbur H. Norcross.
Funeral services for President Mervin G. Filler were held in Allison Methodist Episcopal Church following a service at his home. Bishop William F. McDowell gave the funeral oration; Bishop E. G. Richardson, '96, spoke on behalf of the Dickinson alumni. President Filler was interred at Westminster Cemetery, Carlisle.
Dickinson College President Mervin G. Filler passed away in the University of Pennsylvania hospital after a struggle with influenza. Upon learning of his death, students in Carlisle took turns to ring the Denny bell for a total of two hours. Filler had been President since 1928.
Abram Boser, class of 1905, Trustee of the College, and president of the Carlisle Deposit Bank, committed suicide using a revolver. It was suspected that he was driven to shoot himself by recent losses in the stock market.
A plaque in Memorial Hall was dedicated to those who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. First Lieutenants Andrew J. Bacevich '02 and Neil A. Santoriello, Jr., '02 were honored at the ceremony. Col. Laura Anibal Potter '89, Commander of Allied Command Counterintelligence at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, spoke at the ceremony.
Over Homecoming Weekend of 1991, a program entitled "The War That Shaped Our World" allowed the Dickinson community to remember and consider World War II. Other events held during the weekend included a memorial service for alumni veterans, a film series, an exhibit in the Weiss Center, a symposium, a tour of campus with reference to the war, and a reception in honor of the war-time classes.
