Treasury Secretary Roger Brooke Taney writes to C. J. Faulkner regarding the "act of Congress of July 5th, 1832." This Act, written in response to a case brought by a Virginia family, prohibits posthumous military pensions from being paid when the soldier instead opts to collect a lump sum during his lifetime.
