In this issue, the Dickinsonian welcomes the incoming class. The rules of football are changed and the rules for underclassmen change as well.  Professor William Alfred Hutchinson is selected head of the Preparatory school after Professor Downes resigns. Several generous donations, including $10,000 from Carlisle resident Sarah Todd, ensure that Denny will be rebuilt with a clock tower. The Musical Clubs give a concert in the Chambersburg Opera primarily attended by Wilson College students. Rhey T. Snodgrass '02 shares "Warsaw Spike: A Dickinson Tale." The ladies of the Omega Psi fraternity offer generous donation to the college endowment.

Several conferences start fundraising campaigns to help rebuild Denny Hall. Dickinson prepares to host Franklin and Marshall as they battle for first place in the Intercollegiate Debating League of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Horace E. Rogers will address chapel with a lecture entitled "Analytical Chemistry - Past and Present" in formal recognition of his receival of the DuPont Chair of Chemistry. New portrait of James Buchanan to hang in the Bosler Hall Alumni Gallery. Plans underway for the development of a rifle team. Dean Vuilleumier heads Carlisle's Gas Defense Squad, a part of the Office for Civilian Defense. Two Dickinson graduates will face each other in the Congressional race in Wilke-Barre and the winner of this election will succeed another Dickinsonian. Six Dickinson students enlist in the US Naval Air Corps Reserve and will begin to form the Dickinson unit under the "V-5" program.

More plans for Pan-Hell Week are being made, especially for the Pan-Hell Dance. A group of students is going with Prof. Fink to the 7th Annual Debaters Conference at State College. Defense stamps will be given when Kappa Sigma hosts its annual Spring Formal rather than corsages. Student Opinion Surveys of America poll about the lack of math college students have studied. Donald Ellswoth Austin '38 is the first Dickinsonian to die in the war with the sinking of the U.S.S. Pope in the South West Pacific. Mixed ping pong tournament announced.

Men from Dickinson will travel to attend a large Interfraternity Council meeting at Gettysburg College. Mixed ping pong tournament is being planned by Coach Kahler. The theme for the Mid-Winter Ball will be George Washington's birthday. Eight new members initiated into Phi Delta Theta. Five professors were among the 107 people that registered for the Armed Forces at Dickinson's third registration day. Kappa Sigma initiates five new members as Phi Mu initiates two. Rushing comes to a close for the fraternities. This week's Student Opinion Surveys of America poll debates the issue of the availability of alcohol near army camps. Three new members elected to Phi Beta Kappa. The semester begins with one new member to the faculty and one to the administration. Changes made to the structure of the Army to enable easier mobility through the ranks. Dickinson Law School changes the structure of its semesters to enable students to finish law school in 2 years, which would enable them to serve in the military. The new Mid-Winter Queen was chosen. The Marines were on campus to talk to students, give out applications and receive applications.

New classes added to curriculum relating to the war and war in general. Student Opinions Surveys of America polls reveal that patriotism has risen in college students since the United States became involved in the war. Dickinson offers accelerated program in accordance with the government's recommendation. Article discusses legacy students in the Freshmen class. Robert C. Neil Bachman, Margaret Bottwright, Rosalie Enders, Robert Furuno, John Gibson, Daniel Koon, Ellen Peterson, Thomas Richards, Edwin Thomas, and Allyn Welliver represent Dickinson at the third annual Pennsylvania State Methodist Student Conference. Miami Triad to hold annual dance. Dickinson ties for first in Shippensburg's annual debate tournament. John Hopper to receive Phi Epsilon Pi Most Valuable Player Award. Famous drama critic, John Mason Brown to speak at the next Cultural Affairs event. Mr. Donald R. Seibert elected head coach for Dickinson Football. Biology Department buys new equipment after receiving a $5,000 donation from Smith, Kline and French Co. Mr. and Mrs. Janos Tar, a young couple from Hungary, remain at Dickinson as visiting guests of the College. Student athlete profiles on Bob Hurley and Mary Stuart Gadd. The Student Senate censures a number of men for participating in a raid of Gibbs House on October 31. Famous British novelist, Elizabeth Bowen will speak at the College. Kappa Sigma wins the contest for best display during Homecoming. The Dickinson Mermaid is returned to President Edel and the College. Construction of the new women's dormitory is underway. Rush ends and 126 freshmen men pledge fraternities including Alpha Chi Rho, Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Epsilon Pi, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi and Theta Chi. The Dickinson Law School begins to require all applicants for admission to take the Law School Admissions Test. The annual trip to the UN is scheduled for October 17 and 18 which will allow students to attend a General Assembly session. A new Methodist church is being built on Benjamin Rush Campus. Parents' Day will be observed on October 16.

A feud between the Student Senate and the Dean regarding the Dickinsonian has been resolved. Chemistry Professor Dr. Vuilleumier died in the Althouse Stockroom and was mourned by the campus community. Four high-achieving seniors are initiated into the Phi Beta Kappa honors society and members of Phi Beta Phi, Kappa Sigma, Phi Mu, and Sigma Chi were also honored for their academic achievements.
