College Lecture Series

Delta Chi holds a banquet.  The new Scientific Course is announced and its requirements and curriculum detailed.  A lecture series is announced.  The results of the Senior Class Day and Union Philosophical Society elections results announced.  Low attendance at the YMCA Star Course's first event is lamented.  Donations to support athletics at Dickinson are encouraged.   The establishment of a trophy room is proposed.  The class of 1899 elects its athletics committee.  Science facilities are improved with new laboratory space and an aquarium.&nbsp

Varsity basketball coach Ed Ashnault to leave Dickinson for position at Colgate University. Student survey reveals approval of "Jan Plan", pass-fail courses, and a reduction in the number of distribution requirements. Rev. Gregory Baum to conclude College Lecture Series. Faculty to act on pass-fail proposal. Also to be considered is the elimination of the distribution requirement . Academic Programs Committee studies possibility of Jan Plan. Yale Prof. Vincent Scully to speak on architecture.

Viral respiratory infection epidemic hits campus as a record 1000 students visit infirmary. Fraternity rush "certification" by faculty allows fraternities to pledge freshmen. Jeff Baron finishes sculpture for area between Union and new library. Mermaid Players to perform "As You Like It." Dr. Bell Irvin Wiley to deliver Spahr Lecture. Young Republicans sponsor forum. Professor Larry Warner explains the significance of a cultural affairs series to the college. Sorority rush concludes with 58 women pledging. William Diebold, Jr. to speak at College Lecture Series.

This week in the Dickinsonian, a group of students and professors will travel to New York for four days as a "traveling seminar." The "Swingle Sisters," a french vocal group, will perform on campus as part of the Cultural Affairs Program. There has been little progress in terms of the Social Rules problem. Gov. Scranton spoke on campus for homecoming. Editorials discuss chapel and orientation. Two students spent the summer working for the Summer Community Organization for Political Education in Alabama. Faith and Society will sponsor a theism versus atheism debate.

This year's film season on campus begins with a screening of "The Birth of a Nation." An open meeting will allow for a discussion about social rules. Dickinson's College Bowl team beat Loyola. The Dickinson College Lectures Committee announced a focus on area studies. Editorials discuss boycotts and the social rules debate. Dickinson students who participated in exchanges to El Salvador and Sweden report favorably. Gov. William W. Scranton will visit the college to receive an honorary degree. The Intramural season opens.
