Dickinsonian, January 22, 1898

A letter written in 1790 by then college president Dr. Charles Nisbet of Scotland recounts his distaste for American society, remarking that "People have as little Patriotism as Religion, & many concurred in the Revolution merely to avoid paying their debts."  A speaker from the Young Womens' Christian Temperance Union addresses students, backing the actions of many young ladies to "put down the drink evil."

Members of the Philadelphia Alumni Association attend a dinner in Essington, Pa.  The college proposes to observe William Penn Memorial day on April 25, 225 years to the day after the granting of "the frame of government to Pennsylvania."  Dickinson is visited by Edward A. Nisbet, a lineal descendant of the college's first president, Dr. Charles Nisbet.

Dickinsonian, April 18, 1929

Prominent educators and public men prepare to take part in the inauguration ceremony of Mervin G. Filler, the eighteenth president of "Old Dickinson".  Clarence A. Welliver is elected as student leader of college band.  William S. Bender wins oratorical contest held in Belles Lettres Hall for his speech on "Lincoln and the Constitution".

College Presidential candidate Samuel A Banks visits the College again. The Mermaid Players' final production of the year will be the 18th century English comedy The Clandestine Marriage. The Office of Student Services opens its miniweek program on Death and Dying with a panel discussion on death and religion. The Committee for Social Alternatives plan more activities for the upcoming year. Student Senate revises its fall budget. The Basketball team suffers two losses.
