Music Groups Present "The Music of Bela Bartok "

An assortment of musicians on campus collaborated to present The Music of Bela Bartok at 3:00pm in the Holland Union Social Hall. The College Choir, under the direction of Truman Bullard, performed three Hungarian folk songs and four Slovak folk songs. Joseph Sobel and Malcolm Goldstein performed "Duets for two Violins". The Recorder Ensemble, coordinated by Daniel Bechtel, performed "Folk Settings for Recorder Ensemble". David Jenkins performed "Allegro Barbaro for Piano". Goldstein and Jenkins performed "Sonata for Violin and Piano (First Movement)". 

1969 Christmas Concert

The College Choir and Chapel Choir, accompanied by members of the College Orchestra, presented the annual Christmas concert at 3:00pm in First Lutheran Church. The choirs sang Andreas Hammerschmidt's "O Beloved Shepherds" and four English carols: Peter Warlock's "I Saw a Fair Maiden", Martin Peerson's "Upon my Lap my Sovereign Sits", "There is No Rose", and Herbert Howell's "A Spotless Rose". 

Noonday Concert

Students and faculty of the Department of Music performed a program of five pieces for the December 2 Noonday Concert. The program began with William Rivoir and David Jenkins performing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Two Arias".  Robert Gasen, Beth Bullard and Truman Bullard then played a trio by Alfred Swan. Jim Drake played an original composition entitled "Ann, then: the sun and the moon". Jerry Blask, Malcolm Goldstein and Jenkins played Charles Ives' "Largo".

Music Department Presents First Noonday Concert

The Department of Music presented the first Noonday Concert of 1969, featuring works-in-progress by  students and performances by faculty. The student compositions featured in this program were "Song" by Juliann Davidson and "Counterpoint for Voices" composed by Davidson, Jim Drake, and Stephen Bain. Malcolm Goldstein, Truman Bullard and Beth Alice Bullard, members of the faculty, played Morton Feldman's "Intermission 6" and Johann Joachim Quantz's "Trio Sonata in C Major". 

Bolshoi Ballet's Film Screening

A film of the Bolshoi Ballet's production of Prokofiev's Cinderella was shown at 8:30pm in the Holland Union Social Hall. Because the company was based in the Soviet Union, it was not possible for them to tour in the United States.  Their prowess in concert dance was nonetheless admired, inspiring the Cultural Affairs Committee to hold a screening of this rare footage of the company. 

Rob Ingles Performs "Canterbury Tales"

Australian actor Rob Ingles performed some of the stories from Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales at 8:30pm in Holland Union Social Hall. Ingles used period costumes and minimal set dressings to portray the most authentic fourteenth-century experience for his audience. He also gave a seminar on Middle English speech earlier on the same day.
