Boyd Lee Spahr confers degrees to four Dickinson College students at Franklin and Marshall College

On Tuesday, February 29th, 1944, President Boyd Lee Spahr, the then current President of Dickinson College, conferred Dickinson College degrees to four Dickinson College students studying at Franklin and Marshall College.

The four students, George Benedict Jr., William Henry Keen, Robert William Long, and Ralph Eugene Lower, each received a Bachelor of Philosophy during Franklin and Marshall College's Mid-Winter Commencement in 1944 after receiving military training there.

Moscow Summer Program Agreement

Dickinson College finalized their study abroad program with the Mendeleev Institute in Moscow, Russia on October 10th. The ceremonial signing that took place solidified the three year agreement between the Institute and Dickinson and allowed for students to study in the College's Russian language summer immersion program.  The program permitted 24 students to attend the Institute for a month long intensive immersion with the Russian language. It also allowed two faculty members to teach at the Institute.

1919 Commencement

Commencement exercises for the 1918-19 academic year were held at Bosler Memorial Hall. Speakers included Bishop Luther B. Wilson, Bishop Rogers Israel, and the Hon. Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy. Fifty-two students were graduated, a number much smaller than usual because of World War I. The Dickinson Players performed Shakespeare's "As You Like It"  as part of the commencement festivities. Because of the effort of overcoming the war, this commencement was nicknamed the "Victory Commencement."

After "having obtained leave to use the Presbyterian church," Dickinson College held its first Commencement exercises. Eight orations were delivered and nine degrees were conferred.  The students "performed all these exercises with a propriety and spirit which did them great honor, reflected much credit on their teachers, and gave ground to hope that the sons of Dickinson College will at least equal, in useful and shining talents, those of any other seminary."

Commencement exercises for the 1827-28 academic year are held, with various members of the graduating class delivering orations. James Buchanan (Class of 1809), then a lawyer in Lancaster, PA, was scheduled to speak, but was "prevented by illness."
