Dickinson College

Belles Lettres Society holds a sophomore oratorical contest. The Freshman begin the croquet season. The decision is made to close the college chapel. The Temperance Movement comes to Carlisle, with dramatic results. Seniors hold a shooting match in the lawn of South College. The choir of the Second Presbyterian Church entertains students on campus.

The Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity holds a reunion in Carlisle. Slight changes are made to the landscaping around campus in preparation for Commencement. The Sophomores and Freshman hold a baseball game, won by a score of 36 to 12 for the class of 1879. A baseball game is also held between a group of college students and members of the local community, won by the student with a score of 34 to 12. 3 students have an egg-eating competition, with 18 eggs a piece.

The Union Philosophical Society celebrates its 88th anniversary in Emory Chapel. The Belles Lettres celebrates its 91st anniversary, also in Emory Chapel.

An alumnus reminisces about the long-forsaken Shakespeare Club.  The Union Philosophical Society challenges the Belles Lettres Society to a joint debate in the College chapel.  Religious meetings are held with the President of the College.  Seniors have dinner with President McCauley and his family.  Sophomores travel to Mechanicsburg by sleigh overnight, perhaps to visit a female college.

Natural science education in schools is discussed. Students bemoan coming examinations.

A history of Chief Justice Roger Taney’s time at Dickinson, written by him, is published. Students debate the national politics of the era.

Sigma Chi Fraternity holds their 11th biennial conference in Philadelphia.  The Union Philosophical Society library reaches 10,000 volumes.

The first issue of The Dickinsonian after a major format change. Quick clips of news about other schools abound. An editorial on fraternities and a story on preparatory schools also appears.

President McCauley's baccalaureate speech. A junior oratorical contest is held. Class day. Commencement. Alumni meeting is held. Classes of '66 and '71 hold reunions.
