Garfield Bromley Oxnam, Methodist Episcopal bishop and president of DePauw University from 1928-36, addressed the College as part of its 1950 Commencement exercises. Bishop Oxnam also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the College.
John Wesley Snyder, businessman and United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Harry S. Truman from 1946-53, addressed the College as part of its 1949 Commencement exercises. Mr. Snyder also received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the College.
A symposium considering the travelling exhibit "A Kiowa's Odyssey" on display in the Trout Gallery was held on October 20, 2007.
A symposium entitled "Within the Landscape: Perspectives on Nineteenth-Century American Scenery" was held on March 27, 2004, in conjunction with a traveling exhibition of landscapes that were on display in the Trout Gallery. The symposium addressed the role of religion in landscape painting, the impact of travel and transportation on attitudes towards the natural scenery, the panoramic mode in Hudson River School painting, and the production and consumption of landscape imagery in prints and ceramic transfer ware.
The printer Leonard Baskin, recipient of the 1963 Arts Award, gave an address in Rubendall Recital Hall prior to the opening reception for an exhibition of his work displayed in the Trout Gallery titled "Leonard Baskin: Aspects of his Graphic Works."
As part of Alumni Weekend, and in conjunction with an exhibit on display in the Trout Gallery, Director of the Trout Gallery Peter Lukehart and Corcoran Gallery of Art Curator Eric Denker, '95, taught a class on 19th- and 20th-century prints.
