The Business Man's Carnival

The Business Men’s Carnival under the auspices of the Dickinson College Athletics department played at the Carlisle Opera House. The vaudeville inspired comedy show consisted of over 40 skits lasting over 4 hours. The cast was more than 100 college men and women from the area. The skits portrayed the leading businesses and merchants of the town. The show was planned and directed by Mrs. M. A. Harris and accompanied by Nellie MacMillen and the McDonald’s Orchestra.

New York Symphony Orchestra Performance

The New York Symphony, a fifty piece orchestra under the direction of Walter Damrosch, played at the Carlisle opera house. Walter Dramrosch was famous for his opera, “The Scarlet Letter” based on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book of the same name. A large number of Carlisle town members and students attended the event and “[felt] highly pleased that they were privileged to hear this great orchestra under the direction of the most eminent composer and conductor.”

Pennsylvania Power and Light Company Features Exhibit in Bosler Hall

The Pennsylvania Power and Light Company featured works in Bosler Hall in light of its new plant Sunbury Power Plant. Members from the Lehigh Valley Art Alliance artwork were featured in the exhibit. Two nationally known members in the field of art, Howard Henry and Henry Marceau, were the judges for this exhibit. Twenty five works were featured in this exhibit.

1950 Fall Art Exhibit Featuring Famous Painters

Seventeen works, fourteen oils, two drawings, and one water color work were set to be featured in the Dickinson Art Gallery of Bosler until December 9th. The artwork was located in the Sharp Room in the Bosler Gallery. Famous artworks such as Adoration of the Magi by Leandro Bassano, Conspiracy of Cataline by George E Cooke, Painter’s Triumph by Mount, and Mumble the Peg by Inman, Battle of Chapultepec by James Walker were among the artworks featured in the exhibit.

Professor Losey discusses Shakespeare's "King Lear"

As part of the faculty entertainment committee's program series, Dr. Frederick D. Losey gave two lectures on the same day about Shakespeare's "King Lear." The first lecture focused on debunking and explaining the incorrect popular beliefs about the play. For the second lecture, Dr. Frederick performed a dramatic reading of the play.

James Mapes Hypnotism Show

James Mapes, a popular hypnotist on campus, performed a show to a full crowd in Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium. Mapes, with a masters degree and undergraduate degree in psychology, had students dancing, falling out of chairs, and forgetting their names on stage. Outside of shows, Mapes worked with the Albert Einstein Society and conducted research with the immune system, teaches pain-reduction workshops, and had a private practice for phobias and fears.

Symphonic Band Premiere Concert

The newly formed Dickinson Symphonic Band gave it's debut performance in Rubendall Recital Hall. The band consisted of 50 players, encompassing faculty, students, and administration, under the direction of Buzz Jones. Student Dave Strohmetz, percussionist in the band, explained that "There were a lot of musicians on campus who did not have the opportunity to perform because the wind ensemble and orchestra took only a limited number of players", and that participating was enjoyable as "the members get to play a wide variety of music similar to what they played in their high school bands".

Jazz Ensemble Fifth Annual Winter Concert

The Dickinson Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of J.W. "Buzz" Jones, presented their fifth annual winter concert in Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium with guest soloist John Oddo. Oddo, a professional jazz pianist and musical director for singer Rosemary Clooney, "showed his expertise as he played with sensitivity and added many tasteful ornaments to the soothing melody".

17th Annual Black Arts Festival

The 17th Annual Black Arts Festival was held March 3-9. The festival, with the theme "A Cultural Celebration", featured lectures, poetry, bands, and a showing of the Broadway musical production Ain't Misbehavin'. In previous years the festival did not have any emphasis on the arts, instead focusing with political science and economic issues.

Sexuality Education Week Kickoff

The second annual Sexuality Education Week, sponsored by the Sexuality Resource Group, kicked off with the Woody Allen film, "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex". The event, which wrapped up Wednesday, October 10th, featured a series of films, discussions, and lectures designed to provide information and education in an entertaining and positive fashion. The issues discussed during the week included birth control, values, abortion, and myths about sexuality.
