Noonday Concert

The Department of Music presented the seventh Noonday Concert of the 1987-1988 academic year in Rubendall Recital Hall. Students and faculty performed Georg Friedrich Handel's "Sonata in E minor" and "Si, tra i ceppi", Frederic Chopin's "Waltz in C# minor, Op. 64, No. 2", an unknown composer's "Welsh Dance", Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "The Old Wife's Tale", Paul Hindemith's "Rondo für drei Gitarren", Johann Anton Logy's "Partita in A minor", Cecile Chaminade's "Concertino", and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Variationen über 'La Belle Francaise' in Eb Major, K. 353".

Mermaid Players' Production of "Guys and Dolls" Opens

Guys and Dolls, by Frank Loesser, Jo Swerling, and Abe Burrows, opened at 8:00pm in Mathers Theatre. Presented by the Department of Dramatic Arts, the Department of Music, and the Mermaid Players, the production ran from April 15-18. The lyrics and music for the production were written by Frank Loesser and the book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. Faculty Cello Recital

The Department of Music presented cellist Nancy C. Baun in a recital at 8:15pm in Rubendall Recital Hall. Accompanied by pianist Nozomi Takashima and violinist John Eaken, she played Camille Saint-Saens' "Le Cygne", Johann Sebastian Bach's "Suite in G Major for Solo Cello", Claude Debussy's "Sonate pour Violoncello et Piano", Pyotr Tchaikovsky's "Viariationen uber ein Rokoko-Thema, Op. 33", and Zoltán Kodály's "Duo for Violin and Cello, Op.7".

The Department of Music presented the sixth Noonday Concert of the 1987-1988 academic year in Rubendall Recital Hall. Students and faculty performed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Stability in a Soldier", "Giunse alfin il momento", and "Deh vieni non tardar"; Franz Schubert's "Wohin?" and "Danksagung an den Bach"; Adriano Banchieri's "Fantasia"; Erasmus Widmann's "Catharina"; Denis Gaultier's "Air"; Robert de Visee's "Menuet"; Samuel Barber's "Rain has Fallen" and "Sure on this Shining Night"; and Ludwig van Beethoven's "Allegro molto e con brio".

Carlisle Brass Performs

They played Marc Antoine Charpeutier's "Prelude to Te Deum"; Alfred Lochel's "Tower Music"; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Fugue" and "Alleluja"; Keith Snell's "Irish Suite"; Sigfried Kong-Elert's "Praise the Lord with Drums and Cymbals"; Claudio Monteverdi's "O Dolce Anima Mea"; Giovanni Gabrieli's "Canzona per sonare"; Ludwig Maurer's Twelve Little Pieces for Brass Quintet; and Leonard Lebow's "Hollywood", "Love Scene", "Detective Story", and "Musical Comedy". 

1988 Winter Choral Concert

The Department of Music presented the College Choir and Chamber Choir in a concert at 3:00pm in Rubendall Recital Hall. They sang Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Ave verum corpus", Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's "Herr, wir trau'n auf deine Guete" and "O Taeler weit, O Hoehen", Josquin des Pres' "El Grillo", and William Dawson's "There is a balm in Gilead". 

Chamber Orchestra and Dance Theatre Group Perform

The Department of Music presented the Chamber Orchestra and Dance Theatre Group in a concert at 8:00pm in Rubendall Recital Hall. The orchestra played Carl Maria von Weber's Jubel-Overture; Richard Strauss' "Morgen"; Gustav Mahler's "Liebst du um Schonheit", "Ich atmet", and "Blicke mir nicht in die Lieder"; Johann Sebastian Bach's "Concerto for Harpsichord and Orchestra in F Minor"; and Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoiure du Soldat. The Dance Theatre Group accompanied the orchestra in the final piece. 

Violin Recital

The Department of Music presented violinist Davis Brooks is a recital at 8:00pm in Rubendall Recital Hall. Accompanied by pianist John Cheek, he played Ludwig van Beethoven's "Romance in F Major", Eugene Ysaye's "Ballade no. 3", Bela Bartok's "Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano", Igor Stravinsky's "Serenade in La", and Gabriel Faure's "Sonata for violin and piano in A Major". 

Buzz Jones Big Band Performs

They played Bob Mintzer's "Computer", Sonny Rollins' "St. Thomas", Gabriel Faure's "Pavane", Sammy Nestico's "Satin 'N' Glass" and "88 Basie Street", John Coltrane's "Naima", Jerome Richardson's "Groove Merchant", Count Basie's "Shiny Stockings", Mark Lopeman's "Just Friends", Buzz Jones' "Flight", Phil Wilson's "Basically Blues", Bob Mintzer's "Techo-Pop", Harry Warren's "Chattanooga Choo-Choo", Tom Scott's "Night Christmas", and Tommy Newsome's "Chimes Festivals". 

Chamber Choir Performs at Historical Society

They sang Heinrich Schutz's "O Lieber Herre Gott"; Robert A Boyd's "Wondrous Love"; Williametta Spencer's "Winds of May", "In the Dark Pine Wood", and "Bright Cap and Streamers"; Crawford Thorburn's "Blessed be that Maid Marie"; William Blake's "The Lamb"; and Henry Purcell's "Rejoice in the Lord Alway".

Students and faculty performed, Roger Quilter's "Take, O Take those Lips Away" and "O Mistress Mine", selections from Michel Corrette's "Suite in F Major/F Minor", Jacques Ibert's "Piece pour flute seule", Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria" and "Sei Mir Gegrusst", selections from Johann Sebastian Bach's "Sonata in E-flat Major", E.T.A. Hoffmann's "Abendluftchen Schweben", George Frideric Handel's "Ricordati mio ben", and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Andante in C Major".

1987 Choir-Orchestra Fall Concert

They performed Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Sergei Prokofiev's Lt. Kije Suite, Heinrich Schutz's "O Lieber Herre Gott", Dietrich Buxtehude's "Liebster Herr Jesu", and Johann Sebastian Bach's "Komm, Jesu, Komm".
