Wellness Week, sponsored by the Student Health Advisory Counsel, put on a week of guest speakers and exercise events encouraging individuals to take charge of their health through positive lifestyle changes. The program emphasized eating well, exercising, and stress management as they key components to feeling better and ended with a Fun Run on October 26th.

Carrera Urges Broader View of Sexuality in Lecture

Dr. Michael Carrera urged a broader view of sex and integration of sexuality with life to over 250 students in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium who came to hear him speak. Carrera, sponsored by the Sexuality Resource Group as part of Sexuality Education Week, was a regular columnist for Glamour magazine and winner of the 1984 American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists Annual Award. Carrera acknowledged that a cultural emphasis on physical sex "sets up standards by which people measure themselves. 'And somehow', he concluded, 'they always come up short.

Abrams' Speech Completes Public Affairs Symposium

Charles Abrams, visiting professor at MIT, wrapped up a series of six major lectures of the Public Affairs Symposium with a speech on "Prospects and Possibilities of Urban America". This subject of the symposium was "Urbanization and American Society". Other lectures included "Urban Sources of Personal Integration and Disintegration", "City: Ferment of Social Organization and Disorganization", and "Decay and Renewal: A Theological Analysis".

Ellen Weaver Delivers Women in Science Lecture

Ellen Weaver, a Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar, gave a lecture in the new Women's Center on women in science and photosynthesis. Weaver, specializing in ocean photosynthesis, has performed research across the world, while advocating for increased participation of women in science despite "sexist wording in ads, textbooks, and some professor's lectures discourag[ing] many women from entering science."

Black Arts Festival Held

The fourth Annual Black Arts Festival was held April 1st through 6th and the theme of the festival was "Shades of Blackness."  Some of the activities included a workshop called "A Career in Foreign Service: For Whom and for What?, a art exhibit featuring the work of Bill Joyner and Kylis Winbourne, and a play called "Clare's Ole Man"

Public Affairs Symposium Held

The Public Affairs Symposium was held from February 14 to February 16, 1974 on the topic of Public Welfare and Selfish Interests.  The keynote speaker was Tom C. Clark, Former Associate Supreme Court Justice, who gave his talk on "Law and Lawyers: Master or Servant of Society?"  Other presenters were Elizabeth Akins, Scott Aldridge, Gil Barno, Robert Barr, Susan Conrad, Larry Feldman, Bob Gardner, Paul Kaylor, Ken Marvel, Philip Nicoll, Greg Sahd, Sarah Tanzer, Karen Tovey, and Eva Zuckerkandel.

Robert Young Speaks

Robert Young ('56) spoke to Dickinson students in the social hall on March 6th about lowering the voting age from 21 to 18.  Young was the State Senator George Wade's administrative assistant and Senator Wade was originally planned to speak but couldn't attend because of committee hearings. 

Dickinson Hosts Public Affairs Symposium

Dickinson hosted the 1969 Public Affairs Symposium from February 10 to February 14.  The title of the symposium was "Dissent in a Free Society" and the four main speakers were John Lewis, Howard Moody, Fulton Lewis III, and Harold Tayor.  There was also a movie showing of "The War Game", an art exhibit by Ben Shahn and a folk concert by Tom Paxton.

Latin American Symposium begins

The Latin American Symposium began on April 13th. The symposium was entitled "Women in Latin America: Changing Roles" and hosted Lya Luft as the keynote speaker. Luft was from Brazil and was an accomplished poet and novelist.  The symposium, which continued to April 14th, also hosted a panel that addressed "Women in Latin American Politics, Economics, and Society. Another panel discussed "Latin American Women in the Arts." 

Neil Weillver delivers the Robert H. and Jane Weiner Lecture

Niel Weillver, an oil painter, delivered the Robert H. and Jane Weiner lecture on March 13th at 8 p.m. in the Rubendall Recital Hall. Weillver discussed his paintings, which were part of the painterly realist school, and how they developed from a cross between abstract expressionism and traditional realism. Some of his paintings were on display in Weiss 204 from March 10 until March 17.  Most of his paintings were of landscapes in Maine and were housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, and the Whitney Museum of Art.

Peter Jennings & David Susskind speak at Television Symposium

On Tuesday, February 6th, 1968, Television producer David Susskind, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission Newton Minow and Journalist and News Anchor Peter Jennings spoke during the PAS lecture on Television and censorship. The symposium discussed various topics relating to television and media, including television's changing influence from being exclusively limited to higher income families to a more public medium like newspapers and magazines. According to Susskind, "they (the upper socio-economic class) could appreciate quality programming.

"Drugs, Alcohol, and the College Student" Lecture

A lecture, entitled "Drugs, Alcohol, and the College Student,"  discussed the use of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and other substances within the college environment. The lecture was given by Michael Green, president of the Collegiate Consultants on Drugs and Alcohol and a recovered alcoholic of 11 years. He gave students tips with how to deal with situations involving pressure and these substances. He also explained the side affects of some of these substances and what they can do to one's bodily and social health.
