College Hosts Panel Discussion on Faith

A coalition of students, faculty, and administrators gathered for a panel discussion of religious differences on campus. This took place in response to the Secularist Students Union’s poster campaign and resulting sidewalk Christian chalk art, events which catapulted questions of religious tolerance on campus to the forefront.

Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and Human Services under President William J. Clinton, delivered a lecture titled "From Dickinson to Citizen: Life Beyond Carlisle" in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium. This event was co-sponsored by the Clarke Center and the Carlisle Hospital, as it took place concurrently with the 1998 Biomedical Ethics Symposium.

Rev. David M. Gracie Speaks

Rev. David M. Gracie was the guest speaker at the College Church service on Sunday November 15. Rev. Gracie, who the Dickinsonian described as a "spokesman for minority groups," discussed "white racism" in his sermon. gave a speech at the College Church on the dangers and damages casue by the "White minority" on third world countries.

Reverend John Wesley Hill Delivers Mass

Reverend John Wesley Hill, the pastor of James Methodist Episcopal Church of Brooklyn, presided over mass in Allison Methodist Church. He gave the annual sermon on the Day of Prayer for Colleges, which is held on the last Thursday of January. This is the second appearance at the school for this event. His sermon was on “The Secret of Prevailing Prayer” in which he discussed the importance of prayer to be integrated into other areas of study and society. At the event, the senior class appeared in cap and gown for the first time as a class.

Dean Discusses Red Problem at Student Christian Association

Dean Amos B. Horalacher spoke to Student Christian Association (SCA) about ‘Christian Alternatives to Communism’. Dean Horalacher commented on that assumption that Communism was an ideology that claims complete allegiance and loyalty of mean he stated that the conflict was based on religious problems rather than a secular one. He stated that Communism became secular religion. In a separate meeting the week before, Dr. Ivan Gould from the Pennsylvania State Sabbath School Association spoke about the unity of Christian around the world and plans for unions in church organizations.

Capt. W. N. Thomas Gives Chapel Address on Battlefront Religion

Captain W. N. Thomas, chaplain of the U.S. Naval Academy, gave an address at Dickinson's Pearl Harbor memorial chapel service on Monday morning.  Captain Thomas spoke on "Religion on the Battlefront", arguing that religion "can provide the medicine for sick-heartedness brought on by conditions of war".
