Student Senate Approves Administration's Revised Decision

Following "generally obnoxious drunken behavior" on Saturday March 24, 1967, College President Rubendall, and Deans Pease and James ruled that "due to the disturbance in the dining hall at dinner Saturday, all 10 fraternities were to be placed on social probation." In response, Student Senate President Mike Della Vecchia suggested to Dean James that a Senate representative and IFC meet with the ten fraternity presidents to "determine the nature and degree of the disturbance", a suggestion Dean James agreed to.

Springfest Starts

Springfest was also held on the same weekend as Siblings Weekend. The events started on Friday with a concert in ATS. The band "Peace of Mind" performed their reggae music for the college community. On Saturday, the students were able to eat breakfast and watch cartoons in the Snar.  Later that day, the traditional picnic was held on Morgan Field where students and siblings could participate in certain events together. That evening a "beach party" was hosted in the newly opened Lumberyard which concluded the array of events for the whole weekend. 

"Blast from the Past" Event

Formerly known as "Fall Fest", "Blast from the Past" was hosted by CAB.  The event began on Friday,  October 7th and started with  a Lip Sync concert in ATS at 10 p.m. On Saturday, from 3 -5 pm, there was a tye-dyeing workshop on Morgan field. Next, a game of out-of-the-ordinary relay races, called "Anything Goes", started at 4 p.m. The weekend long event ended on Saturday evening with a sock-hop dance from 9 to 12 p.m. in ATS. The dance had two events: a dance competition as well as a costume competition.

Midnite Madness on Morgan field

Midnite Madness, hosted by Panhel with the help of BACCHUS and CAB, was hosted on Morgan field on September 17th. The event had a D.J., Charles Gruenberg, who played good mixture of music for the students who attended.  Any students, faculty, and community members of the College could attend and partake in the fun. The lack of alcohol at the event showed how serious Panhel and other organizations on campus were to following the new alcohol regulations and to providing events that all could participate in. Many deemed this event a successful and fun night.

Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Sigma Host Annual Volleyball Tournament

On April 16th, Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Sigma hosted their annual volleyball tournament. The tournament, which began at 11 a.m. and continued until Sunday at 11 a.m., raised money for the Cancer Research Institute. The allocation of the funds was limited to helping those with cancer in the state of Pennsylvania.

Press Club Smoker

A smoker was held by the Press club in the Alpha Chi Rho house. In special attendance was Doctors Leon Cushing Prince and Wilbur Harrington Norcross, Doctor James Henry Morgan who gave fatherly advice, and Mr Dean Hoffman, editor of the Harissburg Patriot-News, who gave helpful criticism. Hoffman contributed to a discussion of the welfare of the Dickinsonian and to college publicity.

Violence during Phi Delta Theta Conclave

On the morning of Saturday, March 3, 1984, three altercations took place involving visiting members of Phi Delta Theta chapters, Dickinson students, and Campus Police. All three incidents occurred within the hours of 12 and 3 am, with the most serious incident involving a fight between a member of the Allegheny College chapter of Phi Delta Theta and a Dickinson student. The Allegheny student received treatment for a severe bite wound at Carlisle hospital.

Organization Oxfam Fasts for a Day

Oxfam, an organization that promotes peace and the development of areas around the world, hosted their Fast for a World Harvest Day, where Dickinson students were asked to fast for the entire day of November 19th. Proceeds went to the Oxfam fund to help those in need of food and other resources. The organization and their potential political ties created some questioning from Dickinson's community.

Phi Kappa Sigma Returns to Campus

The Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, after being suspended in 1984, returned during the fall  1987 semester. Simon Nash, former assistant director of the national Phi Kappa Sigma organization, Ron Siggs, the former executive director of Phi Kappa Sigma, and Jack Howell, the former chapter advisor, all began recruitment for the fraternity on campus in the spring of 1987.

Celebration of Fall Fest

Fall Fest, a celebration at Dickinson of the fall season and semester, began on Friday, September 18th, 1987 and continued into the Saturday of that weekend. The theme, planned by Tracey Kline and Marty Nebel, students at Dickinson, was Oktoberfest. One of the events that was held at the Fall Fest was a pie throwing contest where students got to throw pies at members of the Raven Claw's Society and the Wheel & Chain Society. The band, Surrender, also played during the festival.

New Policy on Drinking on Campus is Implemented

A new policy regarding drinking and parties on campus began during the academic year of 1987-1988. The policy required that any group hosting a social event had to submit a Registration Form, 48 hours in advance, registering the social event with the director of Residential Life, Marty Redman. The policy also required that the group would have to obtain permission to host the event from the Head Resident or Resident Advisor in the area. A restriction on times of the social events was also a part of this policy.

BACCHUS hosts Alcohol Awareness Week

BACCHUS (Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students) hosted an alcohol awareness week entitled "Truth About Spirits", in cooperation with Alcohol Education, starting Thursday, November 3rd, 1983. Although attendance was weak for several of the week's events, the organization felt the programs were a success. The group, which advocates responsible drinking on college campuses, opened the week's activities with a general information table in the HUB.
