Sigma Chi wins Intramural Basketball Championship
Sigma Chi defeated Phi Kappa Psi for the intramural basketball championship.
Dickinson Wins the First Baseball Game of the Season
To open her season, Dickinson played against Western Maryland in her home field. The college won 14-1 playing an errorless game. The new pitcher, Charles Langstaff had struck out fifteen men.
Sophomore versus Freshman Basketball Game
The 1907 sophomore versus freshman basketball game ended with the sophomores taking the lead with 58 points to the freshman’s 38. “As a result the freshman must wear their little green buttons at least until April 30th”. The line-up for the sophomore team carried over from their freshman game the previous year. The beginning of the game was obviously in favor of the sophomores with a half time score of 53-14, throughout the second half the freshman were able to lessen the gap by 16 points.
Dickinson Loses to State, 5-0
The highly anticipated State game, held in Williamsport, attracted alumni and students alike to cheer on the team. The loss, State-6 to Dickinson-0, was a major upset with the College’s expected win. Explanations for the loss could be due to the slippery field and the fact that the State team had an extra 15 pounds to the man. But it was said that “when you consider the fact that she was outweighed 15 pounds to the man, Dickinson played a remarkable game of football.”
Annual Freshman Versus Sophomore Football Game
The annual Freshman versus Sophomore football game was hosted on Dickinson’s field. The sophomores won the game with a final score of 4-0.
Indoor Track Team Attains Varsity Status
The Indoor Track team, which had competed as a club for the previous three years, officially began practice after the program finally received varsity status. The men's and women's teams practiced together, and five invitational meets were held throughout the season. Indoor track events were the same as outdoor events, with the exception of the shot-put ball being replaced with a rubber one as well as javelin and discus not taking place.
Dickinson Helps Form Women's Sports League
Dickinson along with eight other schools in Maryland and Pennsylvania have joined together to form a independent women's athletic league called Penn-Mar. The participating schools were Franklin and Marshall, Lebanon Valley, Gettysburg, Elizabethtown, Western Maryland, Messiah, Wilson, and York. Field Hockey was the first sport to be in the conference and their first game was September 21, 1977.
Swimming Team wins title in Middle Atlantic Contest
Dickinson College's swim team retained their Middle Atlantic Conference College Division title during the weekend meet on March 4, 1967, held at Johns Hopkins. The team scored 129 points in comparison with the 56 1/2 for second place F&M.
The team also took gold medals in six of the twelve individual events, and set records in both relays. Co-captains Skip Gray and Bill Moyer led the squad as each of them scored firsts in each event they entered.
Dickinson Plays F & M
The Dickinson Devils defeated Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster on Saturday, October 7th. The victory allowed for the Devils to keep the "Conestoga Wagon" for another year. The score was 21 -14.
Dickinson Football Wins ECAC Championship
The Dickinson College Football team defeated Fordham University with a score of 21-14. Dickinson College football fans were nervous for the game due to the winning nature of the Fordham team; Fordham had plans to move into Division I in the upcoming season. The victory meant that Dickinson College won the ECAC Championship and ended Dickinson's best football season with an overall record of 10 - 1.
Dickinson Football Loses to Ursinus
The Red Devils Football team lost to Ursinus with a score of 29-25. This game marked the end of the Dickinson Football team's "undefeated" for the season. The game moved them on to play against Fordham University in the ECAC North Championship.
Dickinson Football Defeats Gettysburg
On November 5th, Dickinson's Football team defeated the Gettysburg Bullets 21-7. The team, which played through terrible weather conditions, was very proud of its victory. The next week, Dickinson was scheduled to travel to play Ursinus; if they were to win that game, they had a shot at winning the conference as well as being the first Dickinson football team with a perfect record.
Eric Johnson Runs Boston Marathon
Eric Johnson, a student at Dickinson, ran the Boston Marathon in 2:43 on April 16, 1979.
Men's Soccer Team Revieves ECAC Bid
The Men's Soccer team was selected to participate in the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC). They were one of four teams that were chosen to compete in the tournament.
Football Team Maintains First Place
The Dickinson Football team maintained first place in the Centennial Conference by defeating Franklin & Marshall, Western Maryland, and Swarthmore within the span of three weeks. There record was 7-0 and 4-0 in the conference division. The football team played Franklin & Marshall on October 8th, Western Maryland on October 15th, and Swarthmore on October 22nd.
Women's Cross Country Defeats Catholic and Drew
On September 17th, the Women's Cross Country team outran Catholic University, defeating them by 27-31, as well as Drew University, winning with a score of 16-47.
Men's Soccer Season Starts
The Men's Soccer team defeated Haverford College on September 14th, leaving their losing streak behind them. The game was won with a score of 2-1. The soccer team was , unfortunately, defeated by York College on September 15th, but regained strength and beat Widener College on September 17th, with a score of 3-0.
Dickinson's Football Team Defeats Muhlenberg
Dickinson's Football team defeated the Muhlenberg Mules for the first time since 1975 on September 17th, 1988. The score was 14 - 12.
Women's Soccer Season Starts
The women's soccer team started their season off on September 3rd as the third place winners at the Alfred University Tournament in New York. The team lost against Oswego, but then won their games against Fredonia and the opponent for their final game, leaving them third in the tournament overall. The tournament left the team in good spirit's for their future season.
Football Season Opens
The football season opened on Saturday, September 10th with Dickinson gaining a win over St. Francis College with a score of 14-3. This left the team hopeful for a win against a strong opponent, Muehlenburg, that upcoming weekend on September 17th.
Dickinson Hosts Bike Race
Dickinson hosted three bicycle races on April 25. The A race was 30 miles and the B race was 15 mils and the track was on Cherry, Louther, and West Street and was one mile in circumference.
Men's Basketball Wins Title
The men's basketball team won the MAC Southern Division West with a 10-2 record.
Washington Redskins hold Twentieth Training Camp
The summer of 1982 marked the twentieth year that the Washington Redskins held their five week training camp at the college. The tradition started in 1963 when, at the invitation of Dr. George Shuman of Dickinson College, a scout for the Redskins chose the school as the site for the team's training camp.
Forrest Craver becomes the head coach of Dickinson Football
Forrest E. Craver (Class of 1899) became the head coach of the Dickinson Football team. As the Dickinsonian reported, Craver was "elected... by the graduate advisory committee of the Dickinson College Athletic Association." Professor Craver also continued to teach Greek at Dickinson.
