The psychology department is conducting experiments regarding motivation in rats. Dickinson is one of the only schools in the country to be doing this, making them a pioneer in the field. The Student-Faculty Curriculum Committee determined that the Graduate Record Examination will not be required for Dickinson graduates to take. The committee is looking into the Area Studies Test instead. An exhibit on Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass is now on display in the library. Senior Howard Davis receives a Falk Fellowship to attend Yale Graduate School for political science.
An honor code will be introduced to new freshmen starting next semester as requested by many students. Methodist churches of the Central Pennsylvania Conference will observe college day, meaning that they will focus on the idea of Christian Education. Students and faculty of Dickinson will go speak at 56 churches on behalf of this event. Dr. William Sloane's book on children's literature has been so widely accepted and praised by critics that it requires a second printing. Dr. Elmer Herber, professor of biology, receives the Darbecker Award from the Pennsylvania Academy of Science.
Dean of Students Russel I. Thompson declares that no exams will be given on the day after major dances. An exhibit of American Folk art is held in Bosler Hall. The psychology department begins offering career aptitude examinations to students. The student senate president calls for an inquiry into funding provided to campus clubs and organizations. The freshman team wins the volleyball tournament undefeated.
Public Affairs Symposium events draws huge crowds. Student Senate elections are noteworthy for the all-female winners, as well as high turnout. Sigma Chi penalized for pledging incident. Psychology Department is faced with large number of criticisms from students. Dick Poston performs a reenactment of "Lincoln vs Douglas - 1858." Willie Nile and Cowboy Jazz perform on campus.
Work still continues on the wall surrounding Morgan Field. Several alcohol incidents that ended in hospital trips for freshman students caused the Resident Assistants to create new policies on alcohol use. The dining hall renovations have be put on hold due to limited financial resources and construction happening elsewhere on campus. The Geology and Psychology departments start to move into what becomes known as the Benjamin D. James Center. The year's freshman classes is yet again the largest in the history of the College and also of a higher quality than previous years.
