Parents' Advisory Council

The psychology department is conducting experiments regarding motivation in rats. Dickinson is one of the only schools in the country to be doing this, making them a pioneer in the field. The Student-Faculty Curriculum Committee determined that the Graduate Record Examination will not be required for Dickinson graduates to take. The committee is looking into the Area Studies Test instead. An exhibit on Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass is now on display in the library. Senior Howard Davis receives a Falk Fellowship to attend Yale Graduate School for political science.

In conjunction with Religion in Life Week, the Mermaid Players are presenting a mortality play called "Everyman." There will be a trip for political science students to Washington DC. The French Club will be taking a trip to Philadelphia to see an opera; all interested parties are invited. President Edel is meeting with national leaders to discuss and learn about U.S. global strategy. Phi Mu and Sigma Chi are playing each other in a basketball game to raise money for the new Student Activity Center.

The cornerstone of Morgan Hall is laid with items inside of it: "History of Dickinson College" by Dr. James Henry Morgan, a Dickinsonian, a college catalogue, a Microcosm, a copy of the alumni journal, a "D" book, student roster, Viewbook, Carlisle Sentinel and a folder from the Carlisle Chamber of Commerce. Seventeen ROTC cadets have been assigned to their specialized branches of the service. Dickinson receives an electron microscope from Mr. George Shuman and RCA which is now in Tome.

The '55 Microcosm is being prepared so that it will be released by May 15. In addition to the usual content of senior portraits, family portraits, organizations, fraternities and sports articles, there will be a "features" section and a whole new layout. The Christian Service Project chapter of Dickinson College will headed to a few stops in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to teach Sunday School classes, attend worship services and participate in a panel for a Youth Fellowship meeting. Freshmen hazing nears its end with the introduction of a new group who controls hazing rules.

The topic of the Public Affairs Symposium will be "The Invasion of Privacy in a Computerized Society." Members of the Parents Advisory Council Committee express definitive views on drugs, pass/fail, and college governance. The newly created Grievance Committee is operational. Night Owl, a student-run counseling hot-line, will become operational. Information on drugs is published in a frequently asked questions format and drug knowledge test.

The Policy Committee will present two resolutions to faculty at their next meeting: 1. The ROTC will be abolished on campus. 2. No academic credit will be granted for courses in the ROTC program. Student Senate invalidated the election results for the Institutional Priorities and Resources Committee due to unclear ballots. Elections are held by Student Senate for multiple committees. Two professors and six students attend the Soviet-American Peace Convocation. The Pa Consortium will sponsor the Summer Transition Program again.

Campaigning has begun for class officer elections, to be held May 17. Wheel and Chain selects six new members. Five Dickinson students represented the college at the Mid-Atlantic Model UN General Assembly, held in Albany, NY. Jerome Kuykendall will chair the Parent's Advisory Council. Committee on Racial Discrimination is formed, and publishes the "Campus CRI-er." Parent's Weekend is success. Course changes for next year are announced. Annual ROTC award ceremony is held. Music students to hold recitals. Count Basie to perform at Spring Formal.

Barbara Stevens, Dean of Women, attends IFC meeting to clarify social rules. A student essay draws parallels between Communism and the U.S. Armed Forces. The Dean of Men addresses the problems of water battles and unregistered cars. An extension of library hours is proposed. Dr. Gilbert Malcolm is honored by ROTC. Parents council meets and approves five projects. Henry Fellowships for study in England are offered.
