Spencer F. Baird writes to Horatio R. Storer about collecting specimens of fish. Baird describes how to outfit a boat with trawls, dredges, and nets to collect fish for study. He thanks him for his help and explains that "although by the kind assistance of our Samuel Powel, we have most of the Newport fishes" they do not have specimens of all of them. Baird also writes about the work that Storer's father [David H. Storer] and assures him "I have always had the kindest feelings towards your father, & fully recognize the eminent & extraordinary service rendered by him to the science of ichthyology."

Commanding General of the United States Army William Tecumseh Sherman writes Horatio Collins King to discuss the military's political tensions with Congress that exist despite the fact that US Army "Regulars... are surrounded by Indians and dangers of the most unpleasant kind." Sherman, who describes a "war of Congress against our Army," warns King about pending legislation that could "strip our profession of all claim to respect." Transcript included.

Edwin Austin Abbey writes to George Henry Boughton apologizing for not having said goodbye before leaving. Abbey further seeks forgiveness for having disliked Moncure Conway prior to formally meeting him with Boughton. Abbey describes the time he has spent traveling with Conway and reflects on his character. In addition, Abbey mentions that Conway has left for St. Malo. Abbey also notes that Conway has preemptively laid claim to write an article on an unnamed Whistler for Harper's Magazine. Transcript included.

October 1879

An anonymous author writes this obituary for Marcus J. Parrott soon after his death in Dayton, Ohio on October 4, 1879. "Mr. Parrott," as the author observes, "was known all over Kansas as one of the most eloquent men in the state and when announced to speak at any point tremendous crowds gathered to hear him and were charmed by his reason and the force of his logic." Parrot, a member of the Class of 1849, represented Kansas Territory in Congress and "came within one vote of being elected Senator of Kansas [but] lost the election by treachery."
