Spring Track

College offers more merit scholarships in attempt to increase enrollment. College alumna Helen Mercer Witt '55 and an arbitration specialist both with speak at Commencement. College President A. Lee Fritschler goes to Washington, DC, to discuss education reform. College attempts to accommodate all learning disabled students. Article on alcohol on campus. Spring concert is cancelled as result of "confusion and misunderstanding." College to graduate its first Tibetan student, Tsewang Namgyal - discussion of his involvement in the Students for a Free Tibet campaign.

The track team defeats Muhlenberg 73-53, and the baseball team loses to Ursinus at home, 4-3. The tennis team loses to Franklin & Marshall. Sports players from the different teams are profiled, including George C. Moose and Kenneth Bruce Vaughn. The track team is reviewed by their coach. Performances of the Glee Club and the Dramatic Club are scheduled. Kenneth Vaughn is also placed in the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Members of the sophomore class are initiated into the Skitch-A-Genee Sophomore Society.

Dickinson beats Lebanon Valley at baseball.  The track team has a meet and the tennis team wins a match against Franklin & Marshall.  A professor’s Ford automobile is stolen and driven through Bosler Hall.  The Freshman Oratorical Contest is held.  Phi Delta Theta holds a smoker.  Sigma Chi holds a dance.  Union Philosophical Society holds elections.

Heads for the YMCA program are chosen.  Nisbet Day is planned for May 1.  An annual tug-of-war between freshmen and sophomores is to be held on May 3.  The track and tennis seasons are underway.  The baseball team loses against Syracuse and Franklin & Marshall.  Interest in participation in summer military camps grows on campus, as a program of the Military Training Camps Association of the United States.

A visiting evangelist leaves Dickinson after a week’s stay.  The track schedule is completed for this year’s season, as is next year’s football season schedule.  A proposed amendment to the student assembly’s constitution that would have only allowed men to serve was shot down, much to the pleasure of the women on campus.  Six freshmen are convicted of breaking freshmen rules, but the issue of abolishing such rules is tabled.  Dickinson’s faculty redrafts the eligibility rules for student athletes.  

Construction on a new wall along high street in front of the Weiss Arts Center begins, and is met with much student opposition. COPUS sponsored an information session on Thursday, February 24th, to help students better understand their options regarding financial aid. The Weiss Center for Arts was recently flooded, but damage to the center was minimal, and faculty members continued to be optimistic about the new arts center. At the University of Denver, students convinced administrators to raise student fees so that the administration could provide better student services.
