Alpha Chi Rho

Rush ends and 126 freshmen men pledge fraternities including Alpha Chi Rho, Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Epsilon Pi, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi and Theta Chi. The Dickinson Law School begins to require all applicants for admission to take the Law School Admissions Test. The annual trip to the UN is scheduled for October 17 and 18 which will allow students to attend a General Assembly session. A new Methodist church is being built on Benjamin Rush Campus. Parents' Day will be observed on October 16.

SASC subcommittee discusses and proposes changes to recognition draft in open forum discussion with students, faculty, and staff. Changes to be discussed at a later date. Housing Board issues final decisions for group housing in the 1990-1991 academic year. Butterworths hire private investigators to look into their son's death.

College Board of Trustees vote to adopt a resolution endorsing the Select Committee Report on Greek Life. Official investigation into student's death is completed. In light of charges brought against Alpha Chi Rho for their involvement in the accident, the fraternity pleads guilty and the chapter is suspended indefinitely. Committees to discuss plan to alter the weekly schedule. The Conventional Theater puts on a production of "Talking With", with both students and professors performing.

Freshman Steven Butterworth dies from major head injuries after falling out of a 3rd story window at the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity the night before. All campus alcohol related activities banned indefinitely. IFC suspends all membership privileges to the fraternity pending further investigation. Results of referendum concerning the Select Committee Report on Greek Life calculated. Carlisle Mayor Kirk Wilson discusses improvement of campus/community relations.

Phi Kappa Psi fraternity charged with harassment and failure to comply with College regulations after an alleged paddling incident. Dickinson College, President Samuel A. Banks, and Alpha Chi Rho fraternity named, with seven others, as defendants in a lawsuit filed by Dickinson Sophomore Scott W. Sinning. No comment from either of the defendants, no comment from plaintiff. Student Food Service workers gain pay increase. College vandalism up, 400-1000 more incidents in 1985 than previous year. Initiation of the London program for the study of the humanities delayed for one year.

Dr. Ralph Abernathy, a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. and a leader in the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott of 1955-56, spoke at the Multicultural Fair and Black Arts Festival. A new cataloging system called, 'AutoCat,' has recently been installed in the library to allow easier searching and regulating of materials. Scott W. Sinning, Class of '87, has called for a new trial against Carlisle resident Steven R. Spraglin, Alpha Chi Rho fraternity and the College for injuries caused by being shot by Spraglin with a pellet gun in the eye.

Former college student Scott W. Sinning, '87, is suing campus administrators, the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity, the Borough of Carlisle, Carlisle Chief of Police Frank Giordano, and two Carlisle Police Officers after being shot in the right eye by a pellet gun. Students that took part in the Malaga, Spain program have brought forth complaints about the program. Men and Women's Swim Team continues to set records during the season.

President Sam Banks has decided to take another position at the University of Richmond as their College President. The Alpha Chi Rho fraternity has been renovating their social room's floor. The Campus Activity Board promises more events for the year, more than just the coffeehouse. Dickinson plays host to two exchange students from Bremen, Olaf Andersen and Gerald Sidek.

The Board of Trustees in undecided on whether or not they are willing to help the College divest all or part of a $6 million worth of investments to South Africa. Alpha Chi Rho is in debt to the College $9, 945 due to a lease agreement where each fraternity member is supposed to pay a certain amount and if there are not enough members to fill all the spaces, the fraternity needs to come up with the extra money, and they have not for the past two semesters. Candidates for Student Senate are featured for the election.

Tri-Delta or Delta Delta Delta has become Dickinson's sixth sorority. A group of academic professionals, headed by Nancy Mellerski, are set to examine the College's investments. BACCHUS (Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students) is sponsoring Alcohol Awareness Week as part of a nationwide event. Beta Theta Pi's fraternity pole-sits for charity, Alpha Chi Rho raises money for Big-Little through a picnic and Kappa Alpha Theta raised funds for the American Cancer Society.

550 freshmen arrive on campus to begin orientation and their college careers at Dickinson. Alpha Chi Rho fraternity is re-issued its charter after a one-year suspension and will begin an alcohol-free pledge program. The Alumni Council endorses a resolution implementing an "alternative beverage" policy at the College where at any College event where alcohol is offered, a non-alcoholic alternative will be offered as well. The Skull and Key Society is denied reinstatement as an organization. President Samuel Banks of the College marries Joanne Trautman.

Dickinson has decided to participate in "Ground Zero Day" to make communities aware of the threat and effects of a nuclear war. Alpha Chi Rho fraternity is being charged in a case of social misconduct and is seeking an appeal. The Commission on the Status of Women released a questionnaire last week to see if there was a general interest in Women's Studies and the results were positive. The rugby team is currently undefeated.

Dave Brubeck Quartet is slated to perform this Friday night in the Carlisle Senior High School gymnasium. Eric Rundbaken will take over duties as the news editor for the Dickinsonian for the remainder of the semester. Phi Epsilon Pi puts on Fall Auto Rallye.
