Dickinsonian, April 1884

The annual school catalogue is released, with numerous printer mistakes.  The Union Philosophical Society alters its constitution.  The Phi Psi's hold their annual reception.  Construction continues for the gymnasium.  The Belles Lettres Society plans its annual Sophomore Contest.  The Freshman play a chosen baseball team from the entire college population and lose to them, 28 to 16.  The Microcosm is not to be printed this year.

Dickinsonian, March 1886

The formation of the Inter-Collegiate Athletic Association of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Inter-Collegiate Baseball Association give Dickinson students access to larger fields of play and more opponents.  Efforts to produce a Microcosm cease.  The Athletic Association decides to reject recognition of the separate teams created by the pro- and anti- co-education factions in the Freshman class, and the idea of a combined team is also rejected.  An underground co-education group is created, with rumors that it is named The Dickinson College Co-Ed Woman's Rights Association

Dickinsonian, October 1885

The junior class decides to publish a Microcosm, the first in many years to do so.  The Jacob Tome Scientific Building is opened.  The college is taking athletics more seriously, and the number of enrolled students increases.  With the opening of the Scientific Building, Professor Himes takes up specialty in Physics instruction and Professor Lindsay in Laboratory and Chemistry instruction.  The Trustees decide that students can enter the societies without pause once they enter the college.  The Seniors defeat the Juniors in baseball on October 3 with a scor

The ladies of the Ladies Hall host a reception for the seniors.  The literary societies have had unusual enthusiasm and activity this year.  At the request of Dr. Reed and with large support from the students, the Dickinson Musical Association is established, a constitution and by-laws drawn up and approved, and officers elected.  A large and convenient exit gate is installed at the athletic field, in response to complaints.  The Junior class elects its officers.  The editors of the Microcosm are chosen.

The fraternities publish two Annuals of the college: the Minutal from the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and the Microcosm from the other chapters.  Freshmen are chastised for stealing eggs from birds’ nests.  A fundraiser is put on by the Dramatic Association in support of the college baseball team, which was well attended by students and Carlisle residents.

Dickinsonian, May 22, 1897

The Junior Cremation Play is a lively and well received affair.  Students spend an evening singing college songs.  The Juniors to hold a reception, instead of a promenade, during Commencement.  The Union Philosophical Society elects new officers.  Seven new yells are invented for the College by students, in response to criticism of the existing one.  The new Microcosm is very well received.  Those interested in track athletics organize and elect officers.

The Microcosm is soon to be released and should be a good one.  The play "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is performed to raise money for the Law School.  The Belles Lettres and Union Philosophical Literary Societies hold oratorical contests.  The Seniors take their class trip to Doubling Gap.  The Freshmen compete in the annual Freshman oratorical contest for the Cole and Walkley prizes.  The Junior class will give its Cremation Play, a revival of a tradition not performed since 1893.

Sue Palmer is chosen as the new editor of the Microcosm Yearbook. World's leading recital cellist, Gregor Piatigorsky to perform for the last Cultural Affairs event of the academic year. Jeanne Thomas crowned the ROTC Dance Queen. The College celebrates the 185th Anniversary of its founding. A number of senior women attend the American Association of University Women reception at President Edel's home. Profile on Mrs. Faith Peterkin, the wife of Professor Peterkin. The track team wins a three-way meet, and Freshman Howie Maat scores a triple win. Tennis team wins fourth match in a row.
