Dickinson defeats Swarthmore in intercollegiate oratorical contest. American Flag and set of silver presented to President George Edward Reed to mark his 22nd anniversary as president of the college. Professor Filler attended the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Atlantic, found other Dickinsonians in attendance. Phi Kappa Sigma held spring dance. Carlisle held its annual spring festival. Harman Literary Society announces programs about women's suffrage. Long opinion piece about exploitation and conservation.

Dickinsonian, March 1, 1917

Sigma Chi celebrates its 59th anniversary.  Dr. George E. Reed returns to Dickinson to give a chapel address.  German actors return to Dickinson to give two plays.  The text of Dr. Filler's speech to Carlisle's Company G upon their return from military training is published.  A list of all campus organization officers is published.  Union Philosophical Society wins first annual debate between it and Harman Literary Society.

Two Dickinson students and the Dean of Men Mervin Grant Filler attend a conference at Yale University on the American student.Try outs for the baseball team begin. Fifty students have already secured summer employment in various industries. The Interfraternity Council purchases a silver cup to be awarded to the fraternity that achieves the highest scholastic average for the school year. The basketball team wins over Mt. St. Mary's College 48 to 23, closing their third successive season without losing a home game. The Dickinson in China fundraiser has raised $1400 of its $2000 goal.

Dickinsonian, June 4, 1931

For the first time since its founding in 1886, the full quota of Phi Beta Kappa fraternity keys are to be given to graduating seniors at graduation on Monday. Senior class day exercises, including the induction of the seniors into the Alumni Association, will take place in one day. Belles Lettres decides to continue to not have rushing for new membership in their society as mentioned in an amendment to their constitution. The honorary fraternity Omicron Delta Kappa initiates seven new members.

Dickinsonian, April 9, 1931

Dr. Mervin Grant Filler, president of Dickinson College, dies in Philadelphia after suffering from a severe case of influenza. Dr. James Henry Morgan, previous president of the college, will be acting as head of the institution until a new president can be found. The superintendent of grounds and buildings at Dickinson, Joseph Burns, dies of a heart attack.

"Grand Old Man of Dickinson" J.H. Morgan steps down from presidency as Mervin G. Filler, fourteen year dean, takes the reigns at the inaugural ceremony.  Boyd Lee Spahr, class of 1900 and president of the Alumni Association, presides over a luncheon as part of the ceremony.  Brigadier General Frank R. Keefer, class of 1885 and Surgeon General of the United States Army is among those to give an address.

Prominent educators and public men prepare to take part in the inauguration ceremony of Mervin G. Filler, the eighteenth president of "Old Dickinson".  Clarence A. Welliver is elected as student leader of college band.  William S. Bender wins oratorical contest held in Belles Lettres Hall for his speech on "Lincoln and the Constitution".

Boyd Lee Spahr, Head of Alumni Association, presents the college with large portrait of Dickinson grad and eminent scientist Spencer Fullerton Baird.  College President Mervin G. Filler is presented with an honorary degree of doctor of laws at the induction of Dr. Edmund Davison Soper as president of Ohio Wesleyan University.

Dickinsonian, September 27, 1928

The Dickinsonian begins its 56th year of publication, noting its roots as a literary magazine under the Belles Lettres and Union Philosophical Literary societies.  Mervin Grant Filler is elected 18th president of the college, filling the vacancy of the newly resigned Dr. James Henry Morgan, while Professor Montgomery Porter Sellers takes deanship.  William Trickett, who served as Dean of the Law School for 38 years, dies of influenza.  Metzger Hall is modernized, both inside and out.  The football team prepares to start their season with scrimmages on Biddle Field.
