College food

Dr. William W. Edel will retire by March 1959 after 12 years as Dickinson's president. Similarly, Dr. Frank Ayres, head of the Math Department, announced that he will resign from Dickinson after 30 years of teaching. The Physics Department will receive a new department head, Dr. Henry Lincoln Yeagley, who comes from teaching at Penn State for 37 years. The "New South" snack bar opens in South College, featuring the special "Mermaid's Delight": a sponge cake with ice cream, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a cherry.

College releases study examining diversity. Biology and Physics revise lab curriculum. Bosler microroom to close at midnight. Proposal to name quads announces. Priestley Award given to chemist Dr. Harry B. Gray. Student suffers health problems due to raw breakfast potatoes. Eaken Piano Trio performs during parents weekend. In this edition nominations for Student Senate president, vice-president and treasurer are being circulated. A vegetarian meal plan is now offered to any student and the Food Committee is currently testing new products to placate the students' disapproval with cafeteria foods. Students continue to protest against labor law violations by the J. P. Stevens and Co. textiles. There is an increase in fraternity pledges of about 10% from last year. Two College marathoners, Steve Braun and Howard Figler, both participated in the New York Marathon.

A recent Food Service survey showed that 54% of the campus disagrees with the amount of money they pay for their meal plan. An ad-hoc Food Service committee is now working at improving the food quality and diversity. Questions were brought forth by students about a small white building that is owned by the College, but leased to the government's Agency for International Development and used as a standby place in case of an emergency in Washington D.C.

Due to a possible budget cut by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency towards higher education, the College has about $70,000 at stake if the $300 million dollar fund is cut by the state. The College commission seeks to improve women's status both on campus, in the classroom and amongst faculty members. The College Chamber Choir is to perform in Washington D.C. at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The College's Food Service is reviewing its food, meal plans and sanitation.

Dave Totaro assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief of the Dickinsonian. The Dana Foundation announced a $250,000 grant to Dickinson to support teaching. The Public Affairs Symposium explores the possibility of using television as a medium for their presentations. Two students were suspended from the school for the remainder of the semester. Al Juechter was voted the new President of the Interfraternity Council. Merle Allshouse is set to replace Richard Waner as Associate Dean of the College effective July 1.
