Debate Team

Dickinson beat by Carlisle Indians in footbal.  Law School opens for the semester.  Delta Chi holds a smoker.  Lack of encouragement for debating and public speaking on campus. Third and Second Section hold their annual late night "feeds".  Harrisburg lawyer Mr. Loeser, Esq. gives lecture on "The Loan Shark."  Green Freshmen caps delivered and widely worn on campus.  The Freshmen class elects officers.

The Dickinson Debate Team received the first ever Inter-Collegiate Debating League of Pennsylvania trophy when they won against Pennsylvania State University. The sophomore class won the Inter-class series in basketball. A national Prohibition Oratorical contest is announced, and every man is encouraged to enter. The senior class elects its Class Day officers.

Debate team defeats Lafayette.  Clarence J. Carver '09 is in charge of international YMCA's new Boy's Work Committee.

The Dickinson Debate Team wins against F&M, but loses against Penn State. The YMCA elects new officers. The Sigma Chi fraternity held their annual winter dance in Metzger Hall. The Union Philosophical Society elected their officers for the spring term. The Dickinson Prohibition League elected their officers.

Through the courtesty of Captain Richard Henry Pratt, the students of Dickinson were permitted to witness the graduation ceremonies of the Carlisle Indian School.  Dickinson agrees to a three-year agreement for intercollegiate debates with Penn State University at State College.

Dickinson defeats Swarthmore in debate, the Carlisle Indian School Band is a great success at the Opera House, and Pi Beta Phi is officially established at Dickinson with 15 members.

A lecture on the biography of historic Justice Roger Taney is given in Bosler Hall. The results of the Mid-Winter Sports are announced. The Debate Team prepares for a debate with State College. The annual reunion of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity was held in Baltimore. Sigma Alpha Epsilon celebrated the 43rd anniversary of their founding. The Union Philosophical Society elects new members for the spring.

Preparations for the upcoming athletic season are in full swing. The Dickinson Trustees met to discuss several issues of the college. The college Debate Team turns down the offer to debate with Gettysburg. The history of the college is recorded in the ledger of the first treasurer of the college, along with several other historic documents. Complaints about the management and organization of the college library. The college’s Glee Club and Orchestra are both reorganized and have begun to practice. Robert H. Varsity basketball team beats Mt. St. Mary's for second time in one season. Senate unanimously passes amendments to constitution, to be presented to student body for final approval. Prominent Dickinson graduate and senior staff member of the Tribune Samuel Cushman Caldwell dies at 87, spotlight on his life and career. Conly Concert Company to perform concert at chapel. Basketball team beats Juniata, loses to St. Mary's. Dramatic Club to present their mid-winter production, "Peg O' My Heart". Debate team wins in dual debate with Lebanon Valley.

Peck Mills Orchestra to entertain at Junior Prom. Basketball team defeated by Williams and Amherst, win Temple match up. Senior class makes plans to build a class memorial at the corner of College and High Streets. Debate team to meet Lebanon Valley College. Girl's basketball team wins third consecutive game in match against Schuyllkill. Jacob M. "Dad" Steigelman, crossing watchman at College and High Streets and campus regular, dies; editorials published in his memory.

Muhlenberg defeats football team 36-0 in the College's worst defeat of the season. Debate Team to have try-outs after six weeks of extensive training. Basketball try-outs see large turn out for upcoming season. Former Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court John Bannister Gibson, class of 1800, to be the subject of one of a series of articles on prominent Pennsylvanians.

Football team defeats Villanova, to play F and M later. Debate Team to start training. World Series baseball games shown on newly installed grid-graph in College gymnasium. Union Philosophical Society to celebrate "Roosevelt Day". Law School graduate Daniel Reese, '99, recognized for being published in The American Magazine.

Dickenson looses against Bucknell and Penn State in the annual triangular debate. The 14th annual banquet of the Dickinson Alumni Association is held in Harrisburg. Coach McAndrews issues the first call for baseball hopefulls. The Dickinson basketball team takes a 33-25 victory over Gettysburg. The Drama Club will present "The Whole Town's Talking" on March 16th. The first annual Miami Triad Dance was held by Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, and Beta Theta Pi fraternities. Motion pictures on the process of film-making were shown by the Mohler Scientific club.

Representative John Kunkel gives address at Saturday chapel. Dickinson debates Gettysburg on the Air. Professor F. Eugene Reader resigns from Dickinson School of Law. Arthur D. Kalher resigns as director of athletics and head football coach at Dickinson. Chi Omega purchases house for national headquarters. Men's baseball beats Elizabethtown 4-2 in first game of season.

A new woman's dormitory. renovations of chemical laboratories, improvements to the College commons, and repairs to East College are approved by Trustees. Examination scheduled posted. Saturday night socials sponsored by the Men and Women's Cooperating Association. Exam hysteria sets in. Dickinson debates with Penn State and West Point.

Mrs. Meredith, Dean of Women, speaks about issues on campus. Debate Squad begins preparations of debate season. College Orchestra takes part in chapel services. Mix up causes freshmen, rather than seniors to get first choice in housing selection.

A listing of cash prizes and medals available for excellence in scholarship appears with descriptions of the specific requirements for each. The final members of the debate team are selected. State Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Von Moschzisker will give a lecture on the "World Court." Belles Lettres literary society holds two separate meetings in the span of four minutes. Dickinson bird lovers erect three feeding stations for native birds around campus. Guest speaker Dr. F. Watson stresses the importance of critical thinking during his address to chapel.

The basketball season opens against Brooklyn Polytechnic. Statistics for the recently closed football season appear. A concert by basso Charles Trowbridge Titmann is announced for the following week. A banquet for the football team is held by the Athletic Association. The women's fraternities pledge 26 new members. An article appears written by an alumnus living in China on the nation's move towards modernization. The debate team holds its second round of try outs. The football team closes its season with a 14-10 victory over Bucknell during the Thanksgiving day game. The freshman-sophomore football game is announced. The opening of fraternity rush is announced. Dr. Richard Burton gives a lecture entitled "Mark Twain as a Neighbor" in which he discusses his personal acquaintanceship with the author. And editorial praising cooperation between Dickinsonians and the people of Carlisle appears. The debate team elects a president and secretary and chooses 12 semifinalists for membership.

The entirety of the Student Senate with the exception of the Senate President resigns and forms a committee for student government reform after new regulations were put into place by the college administration, claiming that the administration's actions inhibited their ability to function as a self-governing body. A point system is instituted for the Freshman-Sophomore scraps. Several concerts are announced for upcoming meetings of chapel. Members of the YMCA provide inmates at the Cumberland County jail with magazines, boxing gloves, and other items for entertainment.

Joe Lightner, a former Penn State football star, is elected the new coach of Dickinson's football team after the resignation of Coach Murphy. Student Senate elects a new president. Preparations for the debate season begin with new teams being planned, as the previous year's team has retained only two members. The Greek Club inducts 43 new members.

Tribunal interviews and sentences five "unruly" freshmen, punishments to be a warning to other freshmen. Debate Club experiences a previously unheard of sixteen female students trying out for the squad, indicating future need for a women's squad. The Social Pathology class inspects the Tressler Orphans' Home. Football team defeats Ursinus.
