Commencement Address

The second of the annual Sophomore oratorical contests is held in Bosler Hall under the auspices of the Belles Lettres Literary Society.  The 115th annual commencement ceremonies are planned, to include a sermon by President George Edward Reed.  The track and field dual meet between Dickinson and the Carlisle Indian School is cancelled due to petty disagreements in methods of arbitration.

The rising junior class holds elections for the upcoming year, already beginning to discuss such events as the 1937 Junior Prom. Wheel and Chain, the women's honorary senior fraternity, selects its new members. Belles Lettres Literary Society plans its sesqui-centennial celebration. Charles R. Gay, president of the New York Stock Exchange, is announced as commencement speaker. Five members of the Debate Squad are inducted into Tau Kappa Alpha, an honorary forensic fraternity. 

Sophomore George R. Conners publishes a booklet of verse entitled "Poems of a Shut-In", written by his prominent father during a long period of illness.  John Biddle is unanimously chosen as the president of the Men's Senate.  Various class reunions are planned for Alumni Day.  Preparations continue for the 146th Annual Commencement, including an address by Kentucky Senator Alben William Barkley.

Several sports teams begin their campaigns: the track team in a dual meet against Schuykill at Biddle Field; the tennis team against the netmen of Franklin and Marshall; and the baseball team away against Penn State University.  It is announced that United States Commissioner of Education John James Tigert, L.L.D., will be the commencement speaker on June 4th.  Professor Leon C. Prince becomes set to deliver a series of addresses throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland following his March 29th address on "Modern Axes and Ancient Landmarks".  Professor Paul H.

The Commencement issue of the Dickinsonian. All of the fraternities elect new officers. Dr. William D. Gould will take the faculty position vacated by the death of Professor Leon Prince. Dr. Walter A. Jessup will give the Commencement Address. Seven people will be awarded honorary degrees, including President Corson and Zatae L. Straw, the first woman to graduate from Dickinson College. This year is the 50th anniversary of Coeducation at Dickinson College. The All-College Senate voted to dispel class officer positions, with the exception of the senior class.
