Student-Faculty Judicial Council

The four women's fraternities on campus will be holding their winter dances this weekend to honor the senior girls. Zeta Tau Alpha will be holding a songfest next week to raise money for cerebral palsy and cerebral palsy awareness. The Student-Faculty Judicial Council is created by the administration, faculty and Student Senate to hear and decide student disciplinary problems. This is a step toward student self-governing and allows accused students to appeal to their peers in addition to administration and faulty.

The Student-Faculty Judiciary Council is taking action against individuals and an un-named fraternity for various infractions of "Social Rules" on campus.

A feud between the Student Senate and the Dean regarding the Dickinsonian has been resolved. Chemistry Professor Dr. Vuilleumier died in the Althouse Stockroom and was mourned by the campus community. Four high-achieving seniors are initiated into the Phi Beta Kappa honors society and members of Phi Beta Phi, Kappa Sigma, Phi Mu, and Sigma Chi were also honored for their academic achievements.

According to members of Dickinson's administration and the Carlisle community, town gown relations are improving. Professor Brubaker's freshman will present the 12th Annual freshman plays. The Interfraternity Council makes a statement that condemns the use of narcotics in fraternities. Robert Goldsand is set to perform at Carlisle Senior High School's auditorium. Several judicial bodies at Dickinson, including the SFJC (Student-Faculty Judicial Council), the SVHB (Student Violations Hearing Board), and WIC (Women's Interdormitory Council) delivered verdicts on cases.

Planning and details of freshman orientation for the class of 1970 are discussed. Propositions for changes in the fraternity rush system are outlined and await faculty approval. Faculty postpone their vote on abolishing SFJC (Student-Faculty Judicial Council) in favor of an all faculty council. Dickinson will have its first sponsored Rally. The division of the philosophy department from religion is one of many academic changes coming to Dickinson. Dickinson will gain an Alpha Epsilon Pi chapter.

For the first time, foreign students and the Senate Foreign Students Committee will present an International Weekend featuring a banquet, music, and discussions. An enticing plot synopsis is given of the upcoming Follies production of Guys and Dolls. The new members of Student Senate announce their goals for the upcoming term as well as their intentions to start a Leadership Council. A faculty sub-committee reviews a proposal to eliminate students from participating in cases of academic dishonesty brought before SFJC (Student-Faculty Judicial Council).

In this issue Benjamin Compaine becomes the new editor-in-chief of the Dickinsonian. The IFC plans to help St. Louis University in the Philippines with book drive. In this issue, the American Chemical Society announced its accreditation of Dickinson, while the Middle States Association released favorable criticism of the sciences at Dickinson. International opera singers Pierrette Alaria and Leopold Simoneau are to visit Dickinson. Student Senate endorsed a Political Awareness week. The Military Ball, thrown by Dickinson ROTC, will be held October 28. Dickinson received approval for a loan to build a new women's dormitory. The experience of a Nepalese student, Chiran Thepa, is discussed.

Dr. Howard Rubendall will succeed Dr. Gilbert Malcolm as college president. Student Senate votes to retain current grading system. Dr. Gilbert Malcolm announces his 1961 retirement. He will remain, serving as Provost. Professor John Dixon resigns from Student-Faculty Judicial Council, stating that it needs reforms. The Board of Trustees holds several meetings, overseen by Boyd L. Spahr. Service fraternities host Christmas parties for children. A five-dollar fine is to be charged to students for cutting class on the days proceeding or following vacation. An annual Christmas fashion show is held. Problems with fraternity housing are investigated. Poor conditions and lack of space are studied.
