Dr. Michael Britton, treasurer of the College ordered that all tobacco products be removed from campus stores in order to make the campus as "smoke-free" as possible. The legality of the Faculty Club in reference to alcohol consumption has been called into question by authorities. The third-annual "Greek Aid" concert sponsored by Inter-Fraternity Council has been renamed "Quad Rock" since it was neither a Greek or a fund-raising event.

The "Take Back the Night" protest, sponsored by the Women's Center, attracted 60-70 students in promoting awareness of rape and violence against women both on campus and throughout the world. Several faculty members have decided to propose a study on the Greek system on campus and make necessary changes based on that study. Some elementary students from Mooreland Elementary school have been coming to Dickinson to learn French from College tutors for almost three years and has been successful. The Dickinson Golf Team is undefeated and are looking to go to Nationals.

Controversy surrounds the Finance Committee's budget for the fraternities and sororities for the 1988-89 school year, and several anonymous threatening letters were sent to members of the Finance Committee. Beta Theta Pi reversed their decision to withdraw from the Inter-Fraternity Council due to conflicts between the fraternity and the council, among other reasons. Freshman Dennis Albertson established a "national service fraternity" called Alpha Phi Omega and will be co-ed and open to both Greeks and Independents.

Rumors arise at the College that Greek life is being removed due to other nearby colleges' removal of fraternities and sororities. GLAD (Gays and Lesbians at Dickinson) was recently formed at the College to provide support groups for "gays and lesbians and [to] educat[e] the college and community about homosexuality." The Fishing Club at Dickinson also was newly formed this year and go fishing in various places throughout Cumberland County. A student delves into what makes the Arts House so special and finds that students that live there enjoy the sense of community and belonging.

Dr. Ralph Abernathy, a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. and a leader in the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott of 1955-56, spoke at the Multicultural Fair and Black Arts Festival. A new cataloging system called, 'AutoCat,' has recently been installed in the library to allow easier searching and regulating of materials. Scott W. Sinning, Class of '87, has called for a new trial against Carlisle resident Steven R. Spraglin, Alpha Chi Rho fraternity and the College for injuries caused by being shot by Spraglin with a pellet gun in the eye.

Athletic trainer Julie Ramsey was not rehired by the College, causing quite a stir amongst students, and led to some students passing around a petition in protest. The Dining Services is under new management by Nick Stamos, who is working to improve the system. Anne Sturges, a freshman, has started a program for mentally disabled children in Carlisle. The women's basketball team made it to the Middle Atlantic Conference only to have their season end after a loss at the conference. Bo Hoppin and Kiki Jacobs of the swim team both qualified for Nationals at the Middle Atlantic Conference.

Students push for an Environmental Science major, but due to curriculum issues, it will not be offered at this time. The FBI have been searching United States libraries for potential Soviet agents. Members of the College community show disapproval over the sorority rush process, which some feel is too short and do not like how it is conducted. Stephanie D'Alessandro has created an entire exhibit in the Trout Gallery called, "An American View: From the Country to the City" about her experience of a semester in Bologna.

Former college student Scott W. Sinning, '87, is suing campus administrators, the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity, the Borough of Carlisle, Carlisle Chief of Police Frank Giordano, and two Carlisle Police Officers after being shot in the right eye by a pellet gun. Students that took part in the Malaga, Spain program have brought forth complaints about the program. Men and Women's Swim Team continues to set records during the season.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity has been revoked of its party privileges for the month of February due to sexual harassment allegations by female students and other violations on alcohol. Rumors have arose about Sigma Alpha Epsilon possibly losing the rights to Biddle House, where they currently live. The Director of Admissions, J. Larry Mench, is working to set the target number of students admitted next year between 530 and 550 in order to divert potential housing crises. Sharon Schultheiss is this year's winner of the Emil R.
