Biddle House

The incoming freshmen made Dickinson history as the largest class ever- 310 freshmen matriculated after 1400 applications, coming from 15 states and 9 countries. Thirty new faculty members have joined Dickinson including Dean of Men Alan Coutts, college chaplain Reverend Mr. J. Artley, and professors in the Departments of Biology, Geology, Economics, History, English, Mathematics, Fine Arts, Physical Education, Physics, Psychology, ROTC, and Sociology.

President Edel approves the existence of the Biddle House, an 'Honor Dorm' where students are allowed to follow less strict regulations. Discussion of President Edel's release of a ten-year report on Dickinson College. Organization of the Religion-In-Life Week program. The Student Senate discusses the possibility of offering polio shots to the Dickinson community. Squash becomes an official team sport at Dickinson. Theta Chi wins the Inter-Fraternity Football Championship, while Phi Kappa Psi comes in second.

Artist Joseph Sherly Sheppard will join faculty as artist-in-residence. Death of Professor Fink announced. Honor dorm opening for senior girls in Biddle House.

Faculty endorses Select Committee Report on Greek Life by nearly unanimous vote. Residential Life allows Sigma Alpha Epsilon members to return to Biddle House basement. Registered parties now to be checked at random by campus police in accordance to the College's alcohol policy.

Select Committee proposes major changes to Greek Life in regard to housing and length of the rushing and pledging periods. Freshman injured on crosswalk outside of HUB. Maryland Congresswoman speaks at convocation, receives honorary degree. Biddle House basement is deemed an unsuitable living space and several members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon are forced to move out. Class of 1993 is second only to that of 1988 in size. Biddle Field track is resurfaced.

Dickinson College is the recipient of the $250,000 grant from The Kresge Foundation. New security system added to Boyd Lee Spahr Library to prevent theft of books. Dickinsonian is awarded All-American status by the National Scholastic Press Association and the Associated College Press. Orientation activities take place. Convocation held for the first time in newly constructed Kline Center. Sally Porter hired as Dickinson's first female campus police officer. Sellers House converted into residence building. 379 W. Louther St. and 152 S. Pitt St. are purchased by the College for housing.

Evaluation of campus security conducted over the summer, changes to follow. Common Hour enters its first full semester of activity. Biddle House to be used as an office and meeting space. Poet Sonia Sanchez reads selections from her various works in the Weiss Center. Mermaid Players perform in their fall production of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses". Dalai Lama addresses crowd at the University of Pennsylvania. "Plan 2000" calls for the building of a new residence hall amongst other changes to campus structure.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity has been revoked of its party privileges for the month of February due to sexual harassment allegations by female students and other violations on alcohol. Rumors have arose about Sigma Alpha Epsilon possibly losing the rights to Biddle House, where they currently live. The Director of Admissions, J. Larry Mench, is working to set the target number of students admitted next year between 530 and 550 in order to divert potential housing crises. Sharon Schultheiss is this year's winner of the Emil R.

In this edition, an overall drop in the College's average GPA has caused some concern. Many believe it is the newly adopted plus-minus system, while others believe it is just natural. New "typesetting" equipment has been purchased by the College for "The Dickinsonian," worth about $16,045. Famous comedian, Steve Martin, is to perform in ATS at Dickinson. A student, Susan Soutner, researches ghost stories about Biddle House, Judge Edward W. Biddle, who apparently hung himself in Biddle House, and Abram Bosler, who apparently shot himself in the head in what is now the Admissions house.

Pass/ fail options, freshmen grades, and general grading systems are discussed at an open hearing held by the Academic Standards Committee who are currently evaluating the grading system. An IPR subcommittee proposes to implement a college legislative body consisting of faculty, students, and administrators. Renovation of the Durbin Oratory is completed to make the chapel more appropriate for all worship and a re-dedication ceremony will follow. The college will open ATS for experimental use in February.
