Work still continues on the wall surrounding Morgan Field. Several alcohol incidents that ended in hospital trips for freshman students caused the Resident Assistants to create new policies on alcohol use. The dining hall renovations have be put on hold due to limited financial resources and construction happening elsewhere on campus. The Geology and Psychology departments start to move into what becomes known as the Benjamin D. James Center. The year's freshman classes is yet again the largest in the history of the College and also of a higher quality than previous years.
The College will begin to offer Judaic Studies in the coming fall semester. Four students from the College will leave in August to study at the University of Mysore in India. A group of five Geology students will travel with Prof. Noel Potter on a two week trip through the mountains of Montana and Wyoming. Gary Oller, a 1970 graduate of the College, will join the staff of the Classics department.
Pass/ fail options, freshmen grades, and general grading systems are discussed at an open hearing held by the Academic Standards Committee who are currently evaluating the grading system. An IPR subcommittee proposes to implement a college legislative body consisting of faculty, students, and administrators. Renovation of the Durbin Oratory is completed to make the chapel more appropriate for all worship and a re-dedication ceremony will follow. The college will open ATS for experimental use in February.
Workmen resume cutting down trees after a student protest halted work for two days. Extensive discussion of student opposition to cutting down trees highlighted the first faculty meeting of the year. The Senate will change its committee structure by dissolving some committees whose duties overlap those of college committees. 35 random freshmen were invited to Dean Hawkins first Fireside Chat.
