The Multicultural Fair Week is in its fourth year and continues to bring awareness to the Dickinson community. The Spahr Library has plans for new additions to be built to create more space for the ever increasing volumes of books. The Library also looks to improve the Inter-Library Loan system and create a computerized circulation system. Required chemistry labs 131 and 132 are combined into a new more hands-on approach in Chemistry 141-foundations of chemistry. The Affirmative Action Officer updates the college's discrimination policy by changing the wording of prohibition of discrimination based on "gender" to discrimination based on "sex" and also adding the probation of discrimination due to "sexual orientation." Student Senate finds a bank error in their favor, collecting $40,000. On Sunday the 24th, a glass Coke bottle filled with tobacco "juice" shatters, spilling onto and damaging multiple books in the library.

Student body slightly prefers old grading system to new plus-minus system. College plans Mock Convention for April. Seth Ray, Steve Bartolett and Matt Creme triumph in Student Senate elections. Lilly Endowment sends over $200,000 to College which will help launch COLE program. John Kemeny wins Joseph Priestley Award. "Eating Out" reviews The Bellaire House (3/5 stars) and The Backroom Discotheque (2/5). "In Depth" explores tenure controversy. Library installs 13 students as security checkers.

Dr. Ralph Abernathy, a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. and a leader in the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott of 1955-56, spoke at the Multicultural Fair and Black Arts Festival. A new cataloging system called, 'AutoCat,' has recently been installed in the library to allow easier searching and regulating of materials. Scott W. Sinning, Class of '87, has called for a new trial against Carlisle resident Steven R. Spraglin, Alpha Chi Rho fraternity and the College for injuries caused by being shot by Spraglin with a pellet gun in the eye.

The library bans smoking in the basement and throughout the rest of the building. Phi Delta Theta fraternity will appear before the Social Violations Hearing Board for a food fight that took place recently. Professor and chairman of the Academic Standards Committee Neil Weissman debunks some of the myths surrounding off-campus study as they work towards new standards.

The all-college Student Affairs and Services Committee held an open discussion on the role alcohol plays on campus. The Beta Theta Pi fraternity's 24 hr polesitting marathon took place Friday and raised over$2000 for M.A.D.D. Author, Critic, and NYU professor Denis Donoghue presents "The Presence of the Past in the 18th Century" as the English department's Core Lecturer. The Library opens an exhibit entitled "A Thousand Days: The Kennedy Presidency" to mark the 20th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination.

In this edition, the College Library has plans to upgrade their card cataloging system to computers. Professor Marjorie Fitzpatrick is leaving the College for a new teaching job after being denied tenure, even after an appeal. Students work to keep Thornwald Park preserved and untouched. Students give their opinions on Three Mile Island and whether or not it should be reactivated after the recent explosion. The baseball team has been unsuccessful this season, with seven straight defeats and not one victory yet.

Phi Delta Theta has requested off-campus housing for their fraternity. Former Officer Thurston E. Cline was dismissed from his position for stealing a bicycle. The Hermitage coffeehouse in Adams Basement is undergoing restructuring to increase security and appeal. The Library and Trickett Hall are both undergoing renovations.

In this edition, off-campus study is becoming explored by students in Bologna, Colombia, I.E.S., India, Appalachia, Israel, THUS, Washington D.C. And CPC. Students brainstorm ideas to attract more people to the K.W. Round room coffeehouse. Students are also investigating food waste in the cafeteria and determining ways to reduce the amount through research. The Social Committee was unable to account for $1,100 in funds from the Hot Tuna concert in November and an investigation is ensuing. The May Morris room in the library now houses rare books, manuscripts and the College archives.

In this edition the College President Sam Banks discusses the "challenge of 1980s" preparation efforts to a "Town Hall" meeting. The Writing Center was recently opened for student use in the library. An increase in enrollment has led to unhappiness amongst students because of overcrowding, many rooms being converted to triples. Students speak out for and against coed housing as an alternate living situation. Women's Swim Team members Alice Reding, Christine Barbone, and Alison Kline all set new school records.
