Mermaid Players

The Sociology department adds a new class in group dynamics and a new professor from the field of social work. A meeting of the Faculty-Student Curriculum Committee is held to discuss the possibility of requiring graduating seniors to take the Graduate Record Examination, a test required by many graduate programs for admittance. There is still no consensus as to what should happen, so another meeting will be held in the coming weeks. The Mermaid Players will be putting on Volpone as their final production of the school year.

In conjunction with Religion in Life Week, the Mermaid Players are presenting a mortality play called "Everyman." There will be a trip for political science students to Washington DC. The French Club will be taking a trip to Philadelphia to see an opera; all interested parties are invited. President Edel is meeting with national leaders to discuss and learn about U.S. global strategy. Phi Mu and Sigma Chi are playing each other in a basketball game to raise money for the new Student Activity Center.

A time capsule is laid in the corner stone of Morgan Hall as it is being built. Classes are let out early for this ceremonious occasion. An anonymous organization donates $50,000 to the building of a new student activities center. Women's fraternities Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha, Phi Mu and Pi Beta Phi pledge 73 freshmen girls. The Placement Office of Dickinson College opens its doors to seniors looking for job opportunities post-graduation. Several new classes are added to the 1956 course catalog including a introductory course in the social sciences all freshmen will be required to take.

The new men's dormitory will be named after James Henry Morgan, three-time president of Dickinson and "savior of the college". In days before Christmas break, there was a contest held to see which class could donate the most dolls to give to prisoners' children in New York City. The sophomore girls won the contest. The Dean of Men at Dickinson College, Amos Horlacher, is elected to fill the pulpit vacancy at the Unitarian Church of Harrisburgh, previously being the assistant minister at this church. Dr.

The Mermaid Players announce their next production. "Our Town" will be performed December 1, 2 and 3 in Bosler Hall. The Aquatic Club is performing later this evening their interpretation of popular children's stories. The entire production is student produced from scenery and lights to costumes and publicity. The Alumni Council agreed to take action on athletic policies as requested by students in the previous issue of the Dickinsonian with the support of the Board of Trustees.

The Admissions Test for Graduate School in Business will be offered this coming year as more schools require it for entrance into their graduate programs. Irvine Smith, the Director of Debate at Dickinson, is elected Vice President of the Debating Association of Pennsylvania Colleges. There is a push to change the premise of Parents' Day to highlight the inner workings of a liberal arts college rather than simply have a schedule of events that shows what life is like at the college.

Rush ends and 126 freshmen men pledge fraternities including Alpha Chi Rho, Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Epsilon Pi, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi and Theta Chi. The Dickinson Law School begins to require all applicants for admission to take the Law School Admissions Test. The annual trip to the UN is scheduled for October 17 and 18 which will allow students to attend a General Assembly session. A new Methodist church is being built on Benjamin Rush Campus. Parents' Day will be observed on October 16.

Outstanding visiting preachers will be visiting the chapel for worship services. Dickinson is holding a tax workshop to give business executives, bank representatives and other interested people a chance to familiarize themselves with new tax laws. These tax revisions are the greatest revisions in the history of federal taxation. The Mermaid Players will be performing "Lo and Behold" on Parents' Weekend (October 14-16) in Bosler Hall. Beginning October 6, music programs will be taking place daily in the Sharp Room in the library. This week there will be a piano quintet and a symphony.

Head Football Coach Ralph Ricker resigns his position to take a job at Lebanon Valley College. The Mermaid Players' third production of the season, The Tempest, opens at Metzger Hall. Jane Lehmer, member of the Debate Team, is named "Gavel Girl of Pennsylvania" at the annual all-state debate competition. The weather vane stolen from South College is returned.

Harriet Lane '53 is elected Mid-Winter Ball Queen; Mary Ellen Dykstra '52 is elected Maid of Honor. Religion In Life week is set to open on Sunday, February 12 with an address from key-note speaker Rev. Miles DePagter. The Mermaid Players announce the commencement of production for a performance of Shakespeare's Tempest.

The Mermaid Players' inaugural production, "Ladies of the Jury," is an enormous success, its final performance being given the night of this publication. The college decides that all seniors taking Comprehensive Exams will be exempt from final exams in their major departments. Phi Kappa Sigma is crowned champion of the '49 Inter-Fraternity Football League.

Plans to unveil a memorial to the 47 Dickinson alumni killed in WWII are announced. The memorial tablet, sculpted by Hans Schuler, will hang in Memorial Hall next to the College's WWI memorial, also created by Schuler. Eighty students accept the constitution of the College Radio Club, further moving to establish what will eventually become WDCV. Howard Gale '36, a popular Central-Pennsylvanian bandleader and school favorite, is hired to perform at Homecoming.

Faculty approves adding a common hour to the routine schedule starting with the 1990-1991 academic year. Ralph Nader delivers keynote address at Public Affairs Symposium, drawing record crowds. Mermaid Players put on production of John Guare's "The House of Blue Leaves". Indoor track teams finish season in Middle Atlantic Conference Invitational with school records broken in the men's 440-yard dash and women's distance medley relay.

College faculty rescinds ban on student alcohol-related activities, suspends all Rush activities for the remainder of the Fall semester. All classes and College activities suspended for Declare Day. The Quarry revamps its ordering system, allowing students to fill out an order form with an order number for their sandwich. This eliminates long lines and crowds of standing people and instead lets them sit and wait for their food. 192 Dickinson students are accepted into Dickinson programs and partner programs to study abroad for the 2006-2007 school year. At least 90% of those who apply to study abroad are accepted.
