Town-gown relations

The YWCA holds a very successful night of entertainment, including musical and theatrical acts.  The editors complain of the incorrect reports and anti-Dickinson attitude in the Carlisle newspapers and the Carlisle community of "know-it-alls" at large.  The last Comus Club dance of the year is planned.  Sigma Alpha Epsilon holds a dance at the Armory.  YMCA holds its officer elections.  Belles Lettres and Union Philosophical Society celebrate their anniversaries with a lecture by Dr. W. V.

Annual Week of Prayer for Colleges upcoming.  John DeWitt Miller to give a lecture, hosted by the YMCA.  Dr. Prince is made an honorary member of the Union Philosophical Society.  Many students returned home to vote in the presidential election.  "Sound Money" students participate in a demonstration in Carlisle.  Dr. Reed gives a speech on campaign issues at the Court House, and then in response to the negative article about it in the Carlisle Sentinel, challenges any local Democrat to a debate, which none accept.

Freshman Steven Butterworth dies from major head injuries after falling out of a 3rd story window at the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity the night before. All campus alcohol related activities banned indefinitely. IFC suspends all membership privileges to the fraternity pending further investigation. Results of referendum concerning the Select Committee Report on Greek Life calculated. Carlisle Mayor Kirk Wilson discusses improvement of campus/community relations.

Efforts made to improve relations between Carlisle and the Dickinson community. Improvements to the library planned for the summer, including new laser printer and computers, as well as a new entrance onto Britton Plaza. Policy Studies majors develop senior projects to benefit future Dickinsonians. Jive Turkeys host the fourth annual ultimate frisbee tournament. Men's Tennis boast most wins since 1960, finishing fourth in the conference.

Discussion takes place on NCAA's proposal to govern women's athletics. The Kline Center is designated as exclusively for the use of Dickinson affiliated persons. Work-study students given minimum wage. Issues of segregation and insensitivity toward black Dickinson students is addressed at meeting at Strayer House. The Dickinson Follies put on their production of "Cabaret."

College report evaluates the status of women on campus. Plans for renovation of ATS begin. Issue of Bosler hours temporarily resolved. Part 2 of the special report on the trustees: board members comment on their responsibilities. Common Hour kicks of Metzger-Conway series. ALLARM receives recognition for its efforts. In this issue, Professor Phil Nicoll of the political science department suddenly resigned from his position five days before the start of classes. For the third consecutive semester, "The Dickinsonian" has been awarded first class distinction by the Associated Collegiate Press. Plans for a new gymnasium are under way and layout and interior pictures are featured in the paper. Another house has been purchased for coed housing on College Street to alleviate the problem of overcrowding at the College. An article on town-college relationships discusses the deep connection between the two.

Abolition of the Dean's List sparks much debate among students. Students now have access to their academic files under the recently enacted "Buckley Amendment." Fraternity pledges are on the upswing. Eight additional students are honored as Dana Scholars. New President Sam Banks outlines his planed policies in a Campus Comment. An editorial examines town-gown relationships.

The story from the previous week's issue regarding Jeri Yaverbaum's trip to ROTC camp continues. Prof. Richard Wanner assumed the position of Dean of Dickinson College. Members of the Dickinson community were hoping that their Community Action Plan would improve town-gown relations for the coming year. The Summer Theater productions, including "23" and "Impromptu", achieved critical aclaim.

According to members of Dickinson's administration and the Carlisle community, town gown relations are improving. Professor Brubaker's freshman will present the 12th Annual freshman plays. The Interfraternity Council makes a statement that condemns the use of narcotics in fraternities. Robert Goldsand is set to perform at Carlisle Senior High School's auditorium. Several judicial bodies at Dickinson, including the SFJC (Student-Faculty Judicial Council), the SVHB (Student Violations Hearing Board), and WIC (Women's Interdormitory Council) delivered verdicts on cases.

Glenn Hitchens receives top ODK Awards. IFC Weekend to feature the Shirelles. Hilbert Sabin and Kenneth Laws added to faculty. Student Senate plans for improvement of Town-College relations.
