Study Abroad

In this edition, off-campus study is becoming explored by students in Bologna, Colombia, I.E.S., India, Appalachia, Israel, THUS, Washington D.C. And CPC. Students brainstorm ideas to attract more people to the K.W. Round room coffeehouse. Students are also investigating food waste in the cafeteria and determining ways to reduce the amount through research. The Social Committee was unable to account for $1,100 in funds from the Hot Tuna concert in November and an investigation is ensuing. The May Morris room in the library now houses rare books, manuscripts and the College archives.

A recent Food Service survey showed that 54% of the campus disagrees with the amount of money they pay for their meal plan. An ad-hoc Food Service committee is now working at improving the food quality and diversity. Questions were brought forth by students about a small white building that is owned by the College, but leased to the government's Agency for International Development and used as a standby place in case of an emergency in Washington D.C.

In this edition Maryanne Cunningham, the Coordinator of Housing and Programs, has decided to leave her position due to curtailing and redefining of her job. Students in Bologna experience political unrest while studying abroad. The Admissions Office has begun a more intense recruitment program and have been currently doing an "Admissions Road Show," traveling to areas like Washington D.C. and New Jersey to find prospective students. Dickinson's golf team has had continued success.

This edition features an article on the study abroad program in Bologna, Italy. There is an ongoing search for a new Dean at the College. At the Open Forum of "The Dickinsonian," students voiced strong opinions in support of a boycott against the mistreatment of J. P Stevens workers.

An 86-year-old tradition was revived at Dickinson, with the inter-society debates between the Belles Lettres and the Union Philosophical Society. A study abroad trip to England is offered for the summer with a focus in Astronomy and Geology. A report was published in the paper by the Task Force on Residential and Social Life, which discussed housing solutions such as with group, special interest, freshman, self-governance, coed, and fraternities. Clyde Vedder, Captain of the swim team, lead the team to victory and has been the top swimmer for the past three seasons.

The Board of Trustees voted unanimously "in favor of implementation of the proposals put forth by the Task Team on College/Fraternity Relations." There are more articles discussing the Presidential race between Jimmy Carter and President Gerald Ford. The Central Pennsylvania Consortium offers Dickinson students a chance to study abroad in Colombia for a semester at the Universidad Bolivariana. College President Sam Banks awards the class of 1921 the annual 'Dickinson Fund Loyalty Award', accepted on behalf of Paul R. Walker '21.

Debates on student services and admissions highlight the Senate meeting. A WDCV poll shows Eugene McGovern ahead of Pres. Nixon in student voter replies. Alumnus Stuart Pankin is highlighted as a participant in the upcoming Young Artists-in-Residence week. The Social Hall sees the Great Debate between Nixon and McGovern campus campaign forces. The Story Theatre Troupe is set to debut its Rites of Passage next weekend. Rick Smolan has featured diary entries and photos from his year in Bologna.

The Committee on Institutional Priorities and Resources sets guideline on residency period. WDCV begins to rebroadcast after a two-and-a-half week suspension. In Dana Hall, three Michael Snow films to be presented by the Film Society. The Mermaid Players to perform The Rimers of Eldritch. The Drug Education Committee plans to expand programs. Dr. Bell Wiley delivers lecture on Confederate leaders during the Civil War in honor of Prof. John Pflaum. Prof. Robert Nilsson discusses possibility of a Consortium-run Junior College in Rome.

Pass/ fail options, freshmen grades, and general grading systems are discussed at an open hearing held by the Academic Standards Committee who are currently evaluating the grading system. An IPR subcommittee proposes to implement a college legislative body consisting of faculty, students, and administrators. Renovation of the Durbin Oratory is completed to make the chapel more appropriate for all worship and a re-dedication ceremony will follow. The college will open ATS for experimental use in February.

Students on the year-long Bologna program returned to campus with resident director Prof. Eugene Rossi, while a new group is sailing to Bologna to start their year-long program with Prof. Paul Angiolillo. Charlotte's Web, a rock band made up of Dickinson students is receiving acclaim for their work in New York. The article from last week regarding the Community Action Program and Ferdinand Jones continues to this week's issue. Lynn Myers wrote a seemingly joking article regarding a thief in the Biology Building being caught by a man clad in green underwear.

Students and Faculty traveling to India stop over in London before flying Air India to India. Coeds at the college opposed the pope's ruling against contraceptive pills. The National Science Foundation granted $171,500 to Dickinson for research. Carlisle residents were split over the issue of stricter gun controls. A Coed goes to the ROTC training camp in Fort Indiantown Gap to report on the conditions and practices of the camp. Mayor Lindsay is still vying for the Republican Nomination.

Representatives from the Architects Collaborative plan to visit the campus Dec. 11-12 to interview students and begin planning for the new Fine Arts Center. US Congressman Edward Biester is slated to speak on law at College and Law School on Dec. 7. Dickinsonian to meet WDCV members in annual football game. Sigma Alpha Epsilon began its annual forum on Wednesday. A campus poll finds Rockefeller in the lead for the nomination for the 1968 presidential election. A mock national convention of GOP presidential candidates has been planned for April of the following year.

The Mermaid Players open "A Man for All Seasons", their first performance of the year. The Dave Brubeck Jazz Quartet is scheduled to play on Friday, Nov. 17, 1967 at the Carlisle Senior High School Gymnasium. David Hagan of the Dickinson College faculty will give a piano recital, Nov. 12 at 3 P.M. in the Holland Union Building. Three separate incidents involving violence directed against Dickinson students and personnel by local Carlisle youths occurred over the past week, resulting in new security precautions taken by Dickinson campus police, including a second patrolman for the night guard and two way radios for communication with the Carlisle Borough police. The original mermaid from on top of Old West was returned after being taken to New York by a Dickinson dropout.

Senate approves a proposal for coed living units in Todd and Mathews houses with the first two floors for men and the rest for women. SDS questions business manager Bloodgood on campus working conditions and wages. The College receives a federal grant providing for community service and continuing education programs under Title I of the Higher Education Act for their program "The Carlisle Education-Action Program for Housing." The College fine arts department will hold an Indian Arts Festival. NSA and NAS consider financial merger.

Student senate chooses its nominees for '70. The popularity of Dickinson's study abroad program grows. The new calendar will provide for a reading-exam period. A negative review of the Student Senate Film "Symphonine Pastorale" is given and compared to Dickinson's boring lull. Interest in studying Russian increases dramatically. A special insert provides introductory information on the Public Affairs Symposium "Science and Public Policy: Environmental Pollution" topics of smog, soot, sewage, and sex, which link overpopulation with pollution.
