Honor System

The baseball team defeats St. John’s, and loses to Lafayette. By a margin of only one vote, the Honor System is voted down at the College Assembly. The seniors go on the annual Senior Picnic. The Union Philosophical Society, College Band, and Class of 1916 chose their class officers.

The Student Senate votes to incorporate the Honor System. Dickinson beats Villanova in baseball. The track teams beats Gettysburg. J.H. Baker, of the class of 1893, wins honor for his work as the President of Baltimore’s Board of Liquor License Commissioners. The Student Senate makes several changes to the annual events calendar. Phi Kappa Sigma wins the first game of the Inter-fraternity baseball series.

The Dickinson Reserves baseball team won against the Shippensburg Normal team. The college continues to discuss the possibility of implementing the honor system.

The sophomores remain in first place in the Inter-class series. Everyone is encouraged to audition for the Dramatic Club play “The Comedy of Errors.” The Sigma Chi fraternity held their annual mid-winter dance in Mentzer Hall. The winners of the Freshmen Declaration Contest are announced. Dickinson considers adopting the honor system.

Mid-Winter Sports event is held.  Program for musical clubs' spring tour.  A proposed amendment to the honor system does not receive the required majority vote.  Kappa Sigma holds eighth annual Mid-Winter Dance.  Herr Waldemar Alfredo and his German players perform in Bosler.  Final exam schedule.  A.D. The senior class wins the Inter-Class Series in basketball. The Union Philosophical debate team won in the twenty-third annual inter-society debate in Bosler Hall. Their argument supported the notion that the progress of America was indeed hampered because women did not have the same rights and abilities as men. Proposed amendments to the Honor System have delayed voting for the institution of the system for a week. The Musical Clubs elect a new president. There is a plea to establish a Founder’s Day at Dickinson.

A complete layout for the proposed Honor System is to be voted upon by the student body. The Phi Delta Theta Fraternity held its annual dance in Metzger Hall. The Contemporary Club attempted to take a sleigh ride, but unfortunate circumstances caused them to return. Alpha Chi Rho had a similar tragedy, upon which they returned to the Fraternity house and celebrated there.  

A Week of Prayer is observed by the college.  A student proposes that the college implement the Honor System.

Fred Holmes '24 wins first prize in the annual Freshman Oratorical Contest. The Dickinsonian attends a meeting of the Intercollegiate Newspaper Association at Gettysburg. The Freshman class votes 168-43 in favor of the Honor System. The Sophomore and Junior classes, Union Philosophical Society, McIntyre Literary Society, Harmon Literary Society, and Greek Club elect new officers.

Founder's Day celebrations are deemed a great success. Student Senate meets to discuss improving "chapel entertainment," a popular notion among the student body. The Honor System (renamed the "Student Government Examination System") is amended and enters its second trial phase. The freshman class elects its officers for the next academic year. The final examination schedule is published.

Journalist and founding member of the NAACP Hamilton Holt gives a talk defending the League of Nations at chapel. Senate announces that, in light of the lack of support for the Honor System, amendments will be made and proposed to the student body. The Mohler Science Club elects officers. Local merchant Foster Cromleigh offers the choice of a fountain pen or gold pencil to the first Dickinsonian batter to hit a home run.

The results from the Honor System (then in a trial run) are published: 179 votes in favor, 77 in favor of revising the current system, and 113 against any system whatsoever. A women's athletic association, headquartered in Metzger Hall, is proposed.

Lady Anne Azagapatian addresses the College chapel, speaking specifically on the plight of her native Armenia. Student Senate votes to give the honor system a trial run, with many students remaining skeptical. Senate also grapples with logistics for catering the annual all-college banquet, a popular tradition that Senate earned much criticism for neglecting through the early part of the year. The Press Club is established and meets for the first time.

An extensive piece is written on the merits of Dickinson's missionary program in China, for which the school is raising money. Belles Lettres and the Union Philosophical Society hold their annual Inter-Society Debate, the topic of which is "Should the U.S. Government enact a rigid Japanese exclusion law?" The examination schedule is posted, as the debate over the merit of the honor system persists.

A vote on the pertinence of the College honor system is proposed. Irishman Seumas McManus addresses the chapel, speaking on his experience as a student of a rural schoolhouse and eventually a large university. The football team ties Haverford 7-7, the same score that the two teams achieved in their game one year prior (to the day).
