Founder's Day

The senior class wins the Inter-Class Series in basketball. The Union Philosophical debate team won in the twenty-third annual inter-society debate in Bosler Hall. Their argument supported the notion that the progress of America was indeed hampered because women did not have the same rights and abilities as men. Proposed amendments to the Honor System have delayed voting for the institution of the system for a week. The Musical Clubs elect a new president. There is a plea to establish a Founder’s Day at Dickinson.

Founder’s Day was celebrated at Metzger Hall. The Dickinson Alumni Athletic Association made further plans to extend their organization. The Union Philosophical Society announces the results of its election. The Intercollegiate Prohibition Association outlines what it hopes to accomplish in the coming year.

Founder's Day celebrations are deemed a great success. Student Senate meets to discuss improving "chapel entertainment," a popular notion among the student body. The Honor System (renamed the "Student Government Examination System") is amended and enters its second trial phase. The freshman class elects its officers for the next academic year. The final examination schedule is published.

The program for Founder's Day is announced, including an address by Professor Leon Prince as well as tennis, track, and baseball matches. The program for Commencement is also published. The Union Philosophical Society celebrates its 132nd anniversary.The Dickinsonian selects its new managerial staff, with Harry D. Kruse '22 as its editor-in-chief. William Bretz '21 gives an organ recital in Allison Church.

Professor Marcus D. Buell of the Boston Theological Seminary addresses the YMCA.  James Young performs some dramatic selections for the campus.  The Orchestra and Glee Club prepare for their upcoming concert.  Dr. Reed is confined to bed with illness.  The establishment of Founer's Day celebrations are still discussed, although no definitive plans have been made.  A holiday on the Friday after Thanksgiving is requested.  Money is collected to purchase a Great Dane to serve as the school's mascot.

Trustee and member of the class of 1848 William Daniel passes away.  Exerpts from an article in the Ladies' Home Journal on the value of an education from a small college are quoted.  The question of improving the exits from the athletic field is continued.  Establishment of celebration of John Dickinson's birthday is encouraged.  Relief from literary work is proposed for those who must regularly prepare sermons.  A reception for the Senior class is held at the Ladies Hall.  The orchestra and glee club elect officers.  There is inter-racial distur

Belles Lettres is victorious in the Annual Founder's Day contest. Student Senate elections are postponed to address the issues that the Senate's current composition of nine fraternity men to five Commons' Club men will remain. Robert H. Duffy will be assisting Coach Johnson with the football team this coming season. Prof. Prince continues his campaign for a seat in Congress.

Founders Day and May Day will be celebrated Thursday of this week. The annual Senior Picnic will be held at Medowbrook Park this year. Mr. G. R. Hemminger presents the College with a rare stuffed "Duckbill" (a platypus) through Prof. B. Floyd Rinker of the English department. The Track team prepares to meet their Gettysburg rivals. Results of a poll by the Dickinsonian show that students favor the current prohibition law. Ohio State Senator Simeon D. Fess will be this years Commencement speaker.

The Dickinson Relay team takes second at the Middle Atlantic Class B College Championship. Nominations are made for Student Senate. Sophomores win the annual tug-of-war, pulling the freshman into LeTort Spring. A celebration of Founder's Day and May Day is planed for May 13th. The festivities will close with a contest between Belles Lettres and the Union Philosophical Society consisting of an original oration, a debate, an impromptu, and a humorous selection. Plans for freshman entertainment in the fall are accepted by the Interfraternity Council. Offices are announced for the Y.W.C.A.

Tau Delta Pi holds farewell banquet for seniors; Elizabeth Keen, Helen Kretschmar, Edith Ann Lingle, Jane Treyz, and Jo Ann Wilson are initiated into Tau Delta Pi; Elinor Derr and Estelle Mumford become Tau Delta Pi officers. Phi Kappa Sigma and Zeta Tau Alpha hold spring formals. Wheel and Chain taps eight new members: Marion Bender, Edith Ann Lingle, Kathleen Briner, Elinor Derr, Goldie Kunkle, Jane Treyz, Doris Bacastow, and Catherine Stern. Second summer session to be held. President Fred P. Corson speaks at Easter Sunrise Service at Arlington National Cemetery.

The 20th President of Dickinson College is inaugurated. The Dickinsonian conducts research the undergraduate life of new college president Fred Corson. The 330th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Bible translation will be celebrated by a supper meeting at Allison Memorial Church. It is remarked that President Corson is one of the youngest college presidents in the US. The Women’s Glee Club plans their spring schedule. A talk is presented by the Association of University Women on the importance of social engineering.

The Alpha Chi Rho fraternity hosts a special reception for Mothers' Day.  "The Temple", a magazine of campus verse created by Beau Geste, the Dickinson College poetry club, is ready for print.  Harold Kline is elected as the new head of the Intra-fraternity Council.  Founder's Day celebrations take place.  Meetings are held to discuss campus politics.

President Corson gives a speech concerning the childish views in which most people view religion, and promotes introspection as a way to fix personal problems and be happy. Wheel and Chain taps eight new members. Methodist Bishop and former Dickinson trustee William Fraser McDowell died in his home Monday. The Debate team wins against Muhlenberg College in the final debate of the season. The Athletic Association awards Letters and elects a new basketball manager. Founder’s Day is celebrated with addresses and a memorial service.

The Guest Day issue of the Dickinsonian. The annual celebration of Founder’s Day turns into a double celebration with the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the local chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Bill Depp wins the Skull and Key Award for Outstanding Activity. Pennsylvanians celebrate the 146th birthday of former US President and Dickinson grad James Buchanan. The Debate Team wins against Ursinus.

Faculty passes motion to abolish discriminatory clauses from school organizations' charters. Opera singer Marquita Moll to sing at Annual Founder's Day concert. Debate Team continues impressive victory streak, securing a trophy at the University of Duquesne's tournament. Life Photographer Margaret Bourke-White spoke about her experiences abroad as a photographer. Professor LaVallee's suspension called into question; a letter from Francis Walter, Chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee, is reprinted.

Dickinson lacrosse defeats Franklin & Marshall, but loses its first ever game in a match against West Chester. The baseball team wins against Susquehanna. Phi Psi remains undefeated in the Inter-Fraternity League.
