Alumni hold a reunion in Baltimore. Thanksgiving Day celebrations are held at Second Presbyterian Church. An editorial discusses "signs of the times" regarding society and its values. Class Day elections are held early during this school year.
The college celebrates the birthday of George Washington as well as the 109th anniversary of the Union Philosophical Literary Society. An alumni banquet takes place in Baltimore, Maryland. The Gamma Epsilon Literary Society celebrates its annual banquet.
A report of the whereabouts and activities of the class of 1897 is published. Traditional "Fair Week" half-holday is canceled, and Friday after Thanksgiving is proposed as a substitute. After a year's break from the usual custom, the requirement of upper classmen to answer to church roll is revived, with disapproval from the editors. United States President William McKinley, Professor Cramer, and Dr. Stauffer are elected to honorary membership in the Belles Lettres Society. The editors call for improved exits from the athletic field.
An alumnus writes an article commemorating the great legacy of Dickinson. The anniversary of George Washington’s birthday is celebrated on campus. Some necessary improvements are called for in East College. The results of the new strength tests are compared.
The new school year begins with a large freshman class, and publication of the names of those who matriculated. Physical Director, Professor Forrest E. Craver resigns and is replaced by John W.
Professor Earnest A. Vuilleumier invents a solids hydrometer, to be used in determining the specific gravity of solid substances. The Board of Trustees authorizes the drawing up of architectural plans for renovations to the college's dormitories and the building of a new gymnasium. New events to be featured during commencement are outlined, designed to include significantly more alumni involvement than in previous years. The French Club presents its two plays in Metzger Hall to overwhelmingly good reviews.
Changes to inter-collegiate rules on basketball lead to the team beginning practice for the season early. A new class on debating and public speaking is held. The Dramatic club announces that it will produce three major productions during the remainder of the academic year, including Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" before the holidays. An article on a missionary's involvement with instituting an athletics program in a Chinese secondary school appears. A feature on Dickinson alumni of prominence in the west appears, focusing largely on football coaches such as Andy Kerr.
Because of an unusual demand, the Board of Trustees is forced to give more money in student loans. Dickinson graduates are elected to state offices. Skull and Key holds its annual winter formal. Dickinson loses to Franklin and Marshall in basketball. The Dickinsonian elects a new editor-in-chief. The Dickinson School of Law is elected as a member of the Association of American Law Schools. The Young People’s Fellowship begins panels to discuss popular issues, the first of which is “What is wrong with the movies?” The Athletic Association will elect officers on Monday.
In the last football game of the season, Dickinson defeats Muhlenberg. The all-College Social committee begins to discuss plans for the annual Doll Show and the Thanksgiving dance. The Tribunal gives the freshman an exam to test their knowledge on the subjects of the College and Carlisle. The Dickinson College Players will perform “Death Takes a Holiday.” A hymnal in which past and present students have been recording comments on the chapel speakers is found.
