A Dickinson in China fundraiser drive begins with a goal of $2,000, to be put towards the maintenance of a professor at the West China Union University. Joe Lightner is reelected head football coach for the 1924 season. A feature on West China Union University, its history, and graduates appears. The Tribunal enacts mandatory study periods for all freshmen four nights a week as punishment for widespread disregard of the Freshman Rules.
The Men's Student Tribunal convicts two freshmen of serious infractions, resulting in the temporary withdrawal from the college of one of the offenders. The effort to develop an honor system by the honor committee continues with extensive surveys of such honor systems at other colleges. Changes are made to the physical education curriculum in order to provide students with a "Liberal Physical Education." Dickinson students may take part in an operetta sponsored by the Carlisle Chamber of Commerce.
Student Senate organizes a pep rally for the big game against Gettysburg in response to the noticeable lack of spirit by students in the recent past. The head librarian at Dickinson, May Morris, suffers a fall from the library stairs, leaving her with both wrists broken and severe spine and shoulder bruises. Tau Kappa Alpha holds a meeting regarding an annual debate with interested members of various campus organizations.
The Dickinson Alumni Club of Ohio is formed in Cleveland, the twenty-second alumni organization to be formed. Seven freshmen are tried by the Student Tribune for laughing at their classmates who had to perform for upperclassmen. The intrusion of Metzger Hall reported last week is said to have been nothing but a nightmare. A national officer of Phi Mu visits the chapter at Dickinson. The coach of the freshman football team is forced to cancel the remaining games in the season due to many injuries.
The passage of the Selective Service Act requires ninety-two of the colleges' four hundred and twelve male students and seven faculty members to register for the United States military. This is the first peace-time conscription in the history of the nation. Senior women prepare to move into a new dormitory called Hayes House, allowing them to leave Metzger Hall and the strict restrictions that come with living there. Two women enroll for the Civilian Pilot Training Program. The Freshman and Sophomore rules will both be enforced by a rebuilt Student Tribunal.
Approximately 40 sentences were given out to Freshmen by the Men's Student Tribunal for various infractions. Board of Trustees decides to offer 5 scholarships (full tuition for the students' first year) to those students with the best essays about John Dickinson. Article recounting the Phi Delta Theta convention at Dickinson, held the previous weekend. The first issue of the new literary magazine came out with much success. All freshman rules are suspended for the rest of the semester by the Tribunal, marking another step in the evolution away from traditional rules.
A meeting for the celebration of the 150 anniversary of Dickinson College is set for tomorrow. A new president of the Tribunal is elected after the previous one withdrew from school last week. Five Dickinson College alumni are victorious in state elections. The Microcosm Photo Contest is underway.
Plans for Homecoming, November 15, are underway. Two recent Dickinson graduates, John Pipa and Robert Forney, take part in local politics, running for positions in Northumberland County. The freshman class revolts against the class rules system, violating every rule but wearing the dink. This is in reaction to the disciplinary actions taken by the Tribunal in the past weeks, including hair-cuttings in the week previous. The freshmen make a list of demands and send it to the Tribunal however, all of their requests are denied by student government.
The Board of Trustees organize several series of lectures on cultural and educational topics for the Dickinson and Carlisle community. They will cover "The Makers of Europe" and "Studies of Great Men." The Sigma Chi fraternity announces at the Interfraternity Council its intent to hold a contest of both scholarship and intramural sports for fraternities to participate in. The Dramatic Club will present several one act plays during Friday chapel in addition to their usual major productions.
