Union Philosophical Society

Sigma Chi celebrates its 59th anniversary.  Dr. George E. Reed returns to Dickinson to give a chapel address.  German actors return to Dickinson to give two plays.  The text of Dr. Filler's speech to Carlisle's Company G upon their return from military training is published.  A list of all campus organization officers is published.  Union Philosophical Society wins first annual debate between it and Harman Literary Society.

Union Philosophical Society wins inter-society debate.  Freshmen defeat sophomores in annual button game of interclass basketball tournament.  Dramatic Club performs "What Happened to Jones".  Senior banquet is held.  Phi Kappa Psi holds its annual Founders' Day Dance.  Junior banquet is held.

Dr. Ira Landrich, Prohibition candidate for president in 1916, gives well-received speech in chapel.  The annual intersociety debate to be on compulsory arbitration of labor vs. capital disputes.  Alpha Chi Rho holds 12th anniversary banquet.  J.H. Atkinson urges Dickinson to adopt military training in case the U.S. enters WWI.

Maurice Palm '18 elected football captain.  YWCA to hold annual doll show.  Plans for an interfraternity basketball competition are begun.  Union Philosophical Society and Belles Lettres Society hold first rounds of tryouts.  Union Philosophical Society elects officers.

Dickinson beats Lebanon Valley at baseball.  The track team has a meet and the tennis team wins a match against Franklin & Marshall.  A professor’s Ford automobile is stolen and driven through Bosler Hall.  The Freshman Oratorical Contest is held.  Phi Delta Theta holds a smoker.  Sigma Chi holds a dance.  Union Philosophical Society holds elections.

Belles Lettres Society wins Inter-society debate against the Union Philosophical Society. Capt. James Gordon Steese (Class of 1902) spoke to Dickinson students about his experiences during the construction of the Panama Canal. Judge Charles Boone Staples (Class of 1874) also delivered a lecture in which he argued that women should have the right to vote.

The Dickinson Debate Team wins against F&M, but loses against Penn State. The YMCA elects new officers. The Sigma Chi fraternity held their annual winter dance in Metzger Hall. The Union Philosophical Society elected their officers for the spring term. The Dickinson Prohibition League elected their officers.

The football team has trouble finding new recruits. Literary societies, such as the Belles Lettres Society and the Union Philosophical Society have added new members and kept old ones. The Senate passes thirteen rules for the new freshmen.

Account of commencement. Junior Oratorical Contest is followed by a Junior Promenade. Board of Trustees meets, decides to purchase the athletic field, and authorizes the construction of a new building for offices, recitation rooms, and literary society halls as soon as funding is secured. UPS and Belles Lettres hold annual general meetings. Frank Moore wins and George Edward Mills receives second place in Senior Oratorical Contest for Walkley prize. President Reed holds a reception for the senior class in his mansion. Phi Kappa Psi holds its annual symposium.

Ames is president. Montgomery P. Sellers wins Belles Lettres Sophomore Oratorical contest; Clarence Balentine wins UPS sophomore oratorical contest. Freshmen hold burlesque. Dickinson competes at the Inter-collegiate Athletic Association of Pennsylvania's annual field day.

Committee created to raise money for the endowment of a chair of The English Bible and Semitic History. Union Philosophical Society celebrates its 102nd anniversary with a banquet. UPS holds elections; S. A. Lewis '91 is president. Belles Lettres holds elections; W. A. Hutchinson '92 is president. Pennsylvania Inter-Collegiate Athletic Association holds annual meeting; Ralph W. Illingworth of Dickinson is elected president.

There is agitation over the question of whether to admit female students to the literary societies. Charles Sewell Weech, '93, dies. Sigma Alpha Epsilon opens a chapter at Dickinson.

Fred Holmes '24 wins first prize in the annual Freshman Oratorical Contest. The Dickinsonian attends a meeting of the Intercollegiate Newspaper Association at Gettysburg. The Freshman class votes 168-43 in favor of the Honor System. The Sophomore and Junior classes, Union Philosophical Society, McIntyre Literary Society, Harmon Literary Society, and Greek Club elect new officers.

The program for Founder's Day is announced, including an address by Professor Leon Prince as well as tennis, track, and baseball matches. The program for Commencement is also published. The Union Philosophical Society celebrates its 132nd anniversary.The Dickinsonian selects its new managerial staff, with Harry D. Kruse '22 as its editor-in-chief. William Bretz '21 gives an organ recital in Allison Church.

The Devereux Players announce a return to the College and a spring performance. Union Philosophical Society elects new officers. Professor F.E. Craver is elected president of the Collegiate Track Association. Craver, along with Professors Prince and Norcross, will also speak at the all-college banquet scheduled for the coming weekend.

An extensive piece is written on the merits of Dickinson's missionary program in China, for which the school is raising money. Belles Lettres and the Union Philosophical Society hold their annual Inter-Society Debate, the topic of which is "Should the U.S. Government enact a rigid Japanese exclusion law?" The examination schedule is posted, as the debate over the merit of the honor system persists.

Belles Lettres, Union Philosophical Society, and the Glee Club all hold their first meetings. Statistics on the 1919-1920 academic year are released, with about 15% of enrolled students dropping out or withdrawing for various reasons. The current student body of 443 is the largest in Dickinson history by more than 50 students.

Union Philosophical Society elects officers. Field Day is held. Turpin, '90, represents Dickinson at the Intercollegiate Athletic Association's field sports competition. A new fraternity, Alpha Zeta Pi, forms. Mr. Hynson wins the Belles Lettres Society's annual sophomore oratorical contest.

Glee Club takes performance tour. Belles Lettres Society and Union Philosophical Society hold a debate on tariffs. Senior Class takes a Ride. YMCA elects officers. A bowling tournament is held. YMCA holds joint meeting with the Carlisle YMCA and the Indian School YMCA.

The prep school boys continue to use up all the hot water in the gym, leaving none for the college athletes. The Glee Club continues to practice for its performances this year. Lyman Abbott writes a column about the issue of unqualified professors holding positions in the college. This year the Junior class will return to the tradition of publishing the yearly annual. The athletes of the school are encouraged to use the gymnasium facilities to inspire some friendly competition among themselves. The Belles Lettres Society and the Union Philosophical Society each elect new officers.

The Athletic Association constructs a new constitution that allows it to hold property and protects its rights and privileges. Over the summer there were several improvements made to the college buildings and grounds. Students are urged to patronize those businesses that advertise in The Dickinsonian. This year’s freshman class includes seven women. The Belles Lettres Society, the Union Philosophical Society, the freshman class elect officers.
