Interfraternity Council

Plans for the all-college picnic in Boiling Springs are announced. The Interfraternity Council determines the rushing periods for the 1923 fall semester and institutes the payment of yearly dues by each member fraternity. Dickinson opens their football preseason with "the strongest team in the country to date on paper." Plans to establish a college sports news service are laid. A piece on the Christianization and Americanization of Hawiian islanders appears.

March 3, 1773 is adopted as the official date of the founding of the college by the Board of Trustees, making it the eleventh oldest college in the nation and the oldest west of the Susquehanna River. President Fred Pierce Corson presents a creed for national defense in chapel, asserting that although the United States have not yet declared war, they are a part of the war. Corson appoints a committee of four faculty members and two students to review the extra-curricular activity point system that is being challenged.

Juniors will be allowed to take classes at the Law School. Letters given out to 11 men, including 9 Freshmen. President Waugh puts forth a plan to delay rushing before the Interfraternity Council. Student committee on social affairs and the faculty social committee to change organization of social functions. About 25 students plan to go to Washington, D.C. for Franklin Roosevelt's presidential inauguration. Junior class votes to have Microcosm dedicated to Mr. Malcolm, the college's treasurer and superintendent of the grounds and buildings. Plans for students to go to a performance of one of Wagner's operas commence. Metzger Hall gets brighter lights by request of its residents. President Waugh proposes changes to the curriculum, which the faculty will vote on soon.

Professor of History, Leon C. Prince, seeks re-election to state senate. Rushing continues for potential new fraternity pledges, while sorority rushing ends. Dickinsonian celebrates 60th anniversary. Dickinson Law School has 54 new men enrolled. The Football team is to open the season with a game against Ursinus . Dickinsonian to conduct straw vote for US Presidential Election.

Funds for a new library are expected to be raised over the next four years. The Dramatic Club announces the cast for their April production of "Tommy." The Interfraternity Council announces a new resolution regarding alumni in the rushing process. Student Senate passes a resolution that will require all organizations to submit an itemized budget to Senate. Dickinson women are invited to "play day" at Bucknell University which will allow women from different schools in the area to play each other in athletic contests.

The basketball team ends its season, perhaps its best in school history. Sophomore Milton Davidson is awarded the sophomore cup for exemplary character and achievement by Omicron Delta Kappa. The winners of the 1932 Microcosm beauty contest are decided and include both fraternity and non-fraternity girls. Student Senate makes plans for a D Club on campus which will ensure that deserving athletic teams are adequately awarded. The Interfraternity Council revises rules for rushing. A distinguished alumnus is lost with the death of Dr. Clyde Bowman Furst.

The sophomore class captures the leader of the freshman class on the eve of the freshman Halloween party. The Macbeth performance drew a full house with more than one hundred of these guests coming from out of town. At a faculty meeting it is decided that Thanksgiving break will be extended to include the weekend after Thanksgiving, therefore omitting Saturday classes for this break. Robert Lavanture of the senior class and the Inter-fraternity Council is elected to attend the National Inter-fraternity Council.

The Board of Trustees organize several series of lectures on cultural and educational topics for the Dickinson and Carlisle community. They will cover "The Makers of Europe" and "Studies of Great Men." The Sigma Chi fraternity announces at the Interfraternity Council its intent to hold a contest of both scholarship and intramural sports for fraternities to participate in. The Dramatic Club will present several one act plays during Friday chapel in addition to their usual major productions.

Alpha Chi Rho resigns from the Interfraternity Council. The upperclassmen have some fun punishing the freshmen for breaking the freshmen rules. The Men’s Senate will form a permanent organization of unaffiliated students in order for them to form a more unified group. The soccer team loses to Bucknell. Alumni are urged to attend the Homecoming celebrations and the Diamond Jubilee of Sigma Chi at Dickinson. An article questions whether the Men’s Senate should be allowed to make decisions for the entire campus, as well as for the women of the college.

Fred E. Sweeley chosen as the football team's new captain. Religion questionnaire for students included. Deferred rushing and pledging is extensively discussed at the National Inter-fraternity Conference. Article on the variation of Freshman rules amongst colleges and universities statewide. YWCA plans May breakfast for Founders' Day.  Plans for senior class picnic.  Glee club nominates officers.  Students volunteer to fight forest fires on South Mountain.  Interfraternity Council elects officers.  Student Senate passes legislation concerning election of campus organization officers.  President Filler appeals to alumni for funding for Alumni Gymnasium.

Dickinsonian to hold annual banquet.  Sigma Chi wins Interfraternity cup in intramural basketball.  A portrait of James Wilson to be purchased for the college under the leadership of Boyd Lee Spahr, Esq.  Debate team defeats Penn State.  Men's basketball finishes its season with a second defeat of Gettysburg.  Interfraternity Council reforms rushing rules.

La Verne Casner elected as most outstanding member of junior class.  Men's Student Senate passes a bill, at the suggestion of Omicron Delta Kappa, creating a committee to audit the books of student organizations not financially supported by the college.  Interfraternity Council drafts new rushing regulations.

181st Commencement Exercises to be the first to be held outside, with seven to receive honorary degrees. New set of social rules instituted, Social Code updated. Debate Council ends their most active season on record. Inter-Fraternity Council announces rushing rules for the upcoming academic year. New system of deferred rushing for women requires rules change. Phi Psi's take I.F. All-Sports trophy. Golf team ends season 6-2 and wins the Little Three Golf Title for the first time in seven years, surpassing all previous records. Allison Memorial Methodist Church destroyed in fire.

More plans for Pan-Hell Week are being made, especially for the Pan-Hell Dance. A group of students is going with Prof. Fink to the 7th Annual Debaters Conference at State College. Defense stamps will be given when Kappa Sigma hosts its annual Spring Formal rather than corsages. Student Opinion Surveys of America poll about the lack of math college students have studied. Donald Ellswoth Austin '38 is the first Dickinsonian to die in the war with the sinking of the U.S.S. Pope in the South West Pacific. Mixed ping pong tournament announced.

Men from Dickinson will travel to attend a large Interfraternity Council meeting at Gettysburg College. Mixed ping pong tournament is being planned by Coach Kahler. Three initiated into Phi Beta Kappa. Four Dickinson students took the exam to enter West Point. Article on the behavior of three dogs on and around campus. The approaching end of the Pan Hellenic week will feature the annual Doll Dance. A talk open to members of the Mary Dickinson Club and women students will be given by Dorothy Kenyon, speaker for the Mary Dickinson Day Chapel, titled "Women and Outer Space." Following incidents dubbed the "Egg Battle" - during which several men raided rival fraternity houses, threw eggs at the outside of the women's dorm and shouted "uncomplimentary expressions" - eleven men have turned themselves and been penalized by the Senate-Faculty Judiciary Committee.

Five Dickinson fraternities participated in the annual Red Cross Drive of Carlisle, collecting money for the organization. The Communications Committee had it first meeting to discuss campus issues including the College's gift to the Allison Methodist Church, the Student Activities Building and accuracy of reports in the Dickinsonian. Following a vote by Student Senate, a committee will be created to be involved in plans for the proposed Student Center.

This edition of the paper discusses the upcoming end of Fraternity Rush, particularly the limited nature of women's fraternities on campus. Dr. Edgar M. Finck will be officially installed as the very first Henry Ford Professor of Education. Dr. Ralph Ketcham of the University of Chicago gave a lecture in Memorial Hall on "James Madison and Dickinson College", focusing on the correspondence between the President and his nephew Robert, a Dickinson student.

The Dickinson Follies' play, "Fly By Night" opens. Omicron Delta Kappa, a national honorary leadership fraternity, taps twelve new members. As a result of a monetary deficit, the college snack bar will close for the remainder of the term. The Scull and Key awards Sidney D. Kline, Jr. with the annual Outstanding Freshman Award. Profile on Dickinsonian Hamlin Neely. Dickinson lacrosse ties a game with Swarthmore and defeats Western Maryland. The track team wins against Juniata. The baseball team earns a victory over Elizabethtown.

SASC, IFC and Panhel discuss the suspension of Rush. College community fasts for Oxfam benefit. Dickinson students participate in pro-choice rally in Washington, DC. Choir and Jazz perform in their annual Concert of Vocal and Instrumental Jazz. DTG presents their fall dance concert, "New Attitudes". Football team defeats Ursinus, earning 2nd consecutive Centennial Conference championship and the College's first NCAA playoff bid. Volleyball places 2nd in ECAC playoffs. Freshman Steven Butterworth dies from major head injuries after falling out of a 3rd story window at the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity the night before. All campus alcohol related activities banned indefinitely. IFC suspends all membership privileges to the fraternity pending further investigation. Results of referendum concerning the Select Committee Report on Greek Life calculated. Carlisle Mayor Kirk Wilson discusses improvement of campus/community relations.
